Tsunade, whose full name is 綱手, is a prominent character in the Naruto series, known as the Fifth Hokage (五代目火影, Godaime Hokage), the Legendary Sucker (伝説のカモ, Densetsu no Kamo), Konoha’s Slug Princess Tsunade (木ノ葉のナメクジ綱手姫, Konoha no Namekuji Tsunade-hime, English TV: Queen of Slugs Tsunade of the Leaf), and by the nickname Tsuna (綱). She is a descendant of the Senju and Uzumaki Clans, one of Konohagakure’s Legendary Sannin, and is widely regarded as the world’s strongest kunoichi and greatest medical-nin. Tsunade debuts in Naruto Chapter #139 (manga), Naruto Episode #83 (anime), Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky (novel), Naruto Shippūden the Movie (movie), Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 (game), and Finally a clash! Jōnin vs. Genin!! Indiscriminate Grand Melee Tournament Meeting!! (OVA), appearing across anime, manga, novels, games, and movies. Her Japanese voice actors are Masako Katsuki (adult) and Haruhi Terada (child), while English voices include Debi Mae West (main), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (child in Part I and 8 games), and Kari Wahlgren (Ninja Council 3). When both died gruesomely shortly after receiving her support, Tsunade lost faith in the idea of dreaming for anything, believing that the mere pursuit of a goal would be doomed from the outset. She retired from the life of a ninja, intending to spend the rest of her life away from her village in the company of her disciple Shizune (Dan’s niece), indulging in heavy gambling and drinking as coping mechanisms. Tsunade becomes especially critical of those aspiring to be Hokage, viewing it as a pointless and deadly position—pointing out that both Dan and Nawaki died pursuing it, and that past Hokage (including her grandfather Hashirama, granduncle Tobirama, and teacher Hiruzen) all died prematurely and, in her eyes, needlessly. She concludes that being Hokage is a “fool’s job.” Tsunade is forced to reconsider her deep cynicism upon meeting Naruto Uzumaki, who demonstrates two profound truths to her: just because a goal seems impossible does not mean it actually is (as Naruto masters the Rasengan at unprecedented speed despite lacking apparent natural talent), and just because the dreamer dies does not mean the dream itself dies (as Nawaki and Dan’s desire to become Hokage lives on in Naruto). Because Naruto is such a stark exception to how she thought the world worked, Tsunade regains her faith in dreams with a passion strong enough to overcome her haemophobia. She becomes Hokage herself, partly to live Nawaki and Dan’s dream vicariously through her leadership, but also to pave the way for Naruto to one day hold the title. She grows close to Naruto, allowing him alone to call her “Grandma” out of genuine affection. When approached by Sakura Haruno to become her disciple, Tsunade accepts despite her blood phobia, showing her capacity for mentorship and investment in the next generation. Beneath her tough, hot-tempered exterior—often expressed through explosive anger, gambling addiction, and blunt criticism—she is deeply protective of Konoha, loyal to her loved ones, and carries a strong sense of responsibility, especially after becoming Hokage. Her personality blends cynicism born of grief with renewed hope, fierce determination, and a nurturing side that emerges with those she trusts. Tsunade’s appearance is that of a fairly tall woman (though dwarfed by fellow Sannin Jiraiya and Orochimaru) of slender build with amber eyes and straight, shoulder-length blonde hair usually kept tied in two loose ponytails bound by red hair ties. She has a violet diamond-shaped mark on her forehead—the Strength of a Hundred Seal. She is fair-skinned with a fairly large bust, despite her disdain toward Jiraiya for noticing it. Her body measurements are B106-W58-H90. She typically wears a grass-green haori with the kanji for “gamble” (賭, kake) on the back inside a white circle.
