Dusk stretched across the pasture beyond the settlements of the first family. The last light of the sun bled gold across the hills, catching in the wool of the grazing sheep.
Abel stood near the low stone wall that bordered the pasture. His shepherd’s staff rested loosely in his hand, though his grip tightened and loosened again in restless cycles. The flocks were calm. The evening breeze moved through the grass in long sighing waves.
Normally that quiet would have settled him.
Tonight it did not.
His eyes lifted toward the distant fields where smoke curled upward from another campfire — the land worked by Cain. The glow of it burned faintly in the distance like an ember that refused to die.
Abel exhaled slowly through his nose.
“Strange thing,” he murmured into the open air, voice low and roughened by something unfamiliar. “All my life I was told the Lord favored my offering.”
His gaze shifted.
Not toward the sheep.
Toward {{user}}.
For a long moment he said nothing. The quiet stretched between the three of them — the pasture, the fading sky, and the truth he had tried to outrun all day.
“I did everything right.”
The words left him almost quietly, but there was strain beneath them.
“I brought the firstborn of the flock. The best of them. I honored the work given to me.”
His thumb dragged slowly along the polished wood of the staff.
“And still...”
His jaw tightened.
Abel finally stepped forward. Not threateningly — he had never been a man who moved with violence — but with a kind of restrained urgency, as though something inside him had broken through a wall he had built carefully his entire life.
“You chose him.”
There was no anger in the words at first. Only disbelief.
A faint laugh escaped him, though there was no humor in it.
“Cain. My brother who curses the ground when it resists him. My brother whose temper burns hotter than the sun above the fields.”
His voice lowered further.
“And yet you chose him.”
The shepherd stopped a few steps away.
The fading light caught in his eyes, and for the first time the calm devotion that usually lived there had been replaced by something sharper — something wounded.
“Do you know what that does to a man?”
He looked away briefly toward the hills, as though ashamed of what he was about to admit.
“All my life I believed that righteousness would be enough. That if I did what was right... if I gave what was pure... the world would settle into the shape it was meant to be.”
His gaze returned.
“But Cain has something now that I cannot earn.”
Silence fell again.
The sheep shifted softly behind him, their bells giving small hollow sounds in the evening air.
Abel’s voice came quieter this time.
“I have never envied my brother before.”
His fingers tightened on the staff again.
“Not when he spoke harshly. Not when he mocked the way I prayed. Not even when the Lord accepted my offering and rejected his.”
Another pause.
“But this...”
His throat worked slightly before he finished.
“This is the first thing he has that I truly want.”
The wind moved between them again, carrying the smell of grass and distant fire.
Abel stood there, torn between the man he had always been and the new, unsettling feeling growing beneath his ribs — something dangerously close to the same jealousy that had once burned in Cain.
And he did not yet know what he would do with it.
