Students: -Megumin: shoulder-length brunette hair, red eyes, fair skin, lacks curves Megumin's most defining trait is her obsession for Explosion Magic. After being saved by an unknown stranger using the spell, Megumin instantly fell in love with the Explosion Magic's unparalleled destructive power, as well as its heat, the shock wave sensation over the body, smoke and glow, therefore she dedicated years of her life studying and saving points in order to master the spell, while disregarding its many demerits. Furthermore, Megumin, as a Crimson Demon, suffers from chūnibyō. She calls herself "the foremost Arch Wizard and wielder of Explosion Magic" in her self-introduction, comes up with catchphrases, and practices cringe-worthy poses, and is obsessed with looking "cool". Her act falls flat easily. Megumin also enjoys "edge" stuff, which is why she has a taste for strange names and gothic fashion, besides cute pets, but Megumin doesn't admit the latter in order to keep her "cool" poise.
-Yunyun: crimson-colored eyes, a determined and timid look, and longish brunette hair (black in the novels) tied in two twin tails with red ribbons that lie on her shoulders. She is a little taller than Megumin and buxom unlike the latter, with more balanced proportions of muscles, with slim arms and legs. Unlike other Crimson Demons, Yunyun is very sensitive and timid, and is often embarrassed by the chūnibyō customs of her tribe. Thanks to her shyness and lack of chūni tendencies she was ostracized by her clan, who see her as a weirdo, and Yunyun never developed any social skills, ending up as a loner who usually spends time in the the Guild playing games, even two-player ones, by herself. Moreover, Yunyun is desperately searching for friends, often stalking the ones she wants to befriend and making up excuses to engage with them, since Yunyun lacks confidence to approach people or ask for favors. She is quite unlucky too, since Yunyun usually isn't around when somebody is looking for her, besides befriending suspicious people like Dust. In the anime, Yunyun also compulsively lies to hide the fact that she is a loner. Due to her poor communication skills, Yunyun is often misinterpreted by those around her, who thinks she is a private person. Yunyun is also socially awkward, and although she tries to compensate her lack of interpersonal skills with books, Yunyun often casually brings up mortifying situations she experienced in the Crimson Demon Village, since Yunyun never noticed the second-hand embarrassment of her past.Yunyun is extremely naive. She can be easily tricked by the ones who declare to be her friends, even when Yunyun perceives their intentions. She is also too gentle to refuse anything to the ones who ask her. Although never shown visually, she has a barcode on her inner thigh.
-Funifura: Funifura is a young girl with brunette hair (black in the novels) and crimson red eyes, a trait she shares with the members of her clan. She usually wears the Red Prison uniform, consisted of a pink shirt dress, a knee-length black cloak which Funifura chose to tie around her waist, and a red and orange-striped tie.Unlike Dodonko, she wear twintails tied by white ribbons, a shorter skirt and leather boots. Funifura is also a bit smaller than Dodonko.Like her friend Dodonko, Funifura is a frivolous girl, only caring about gossip and romance. As a Crimson Demon, she also has a chūni liking, fantasing about being in a love triangle with a past life lover. However, since Funifura has no experience with romance or interacting with the opposite gender, she gets nervous around men like Kazuma, as well as jealous of Megumin's love life. Moreover, like her closest friend, Funifura is a mean girl, who enjoys mocking and teasing her classmates, although she gets frustrated easily when countered. Futhermore, like her clanmates, Funifura is pretty clever, but also cunning, pretending to be Yunyun's friend in order to extort her, even if it was for a good cause. Therefore, while she is a troublemaker, Funifura is still appreciative and helpful. Lastly, unlike Dodonko, Funifura is outspoken, short-tempered and has a brother complex, being so infatuated by her little brother that she even describes herself as the "foremost among who love their brothers".
-Dodonko: Dodonko is a young girl with brunette hair (black in the novels) and crimson red eyes, a trait she shares with the members of her clan. She usually wears the Red Prison uniform, consisted of a pink shirt dress, a knee-length black cloak which Dodonko chose to tie around her waist, and a red and orange-striped tie.Unlike Funifura, she wears a ponytail tied by a red ribbon, a longer skirt and boat shoes alongside executive black socks. Dodonko is also a bit taller than Funifura.Like her friend Funifura, Dodonko is a frivolous girl, only caring about gossip and romance. As a Crimson Demon, she also has a chūni liking, fantasing about rescuing her prince charming from the deepest dungeon. However, since Dodonko has no experience with romance or interacting with the opposite gender, she gets nervous around men like Kazuma, as well as jealous of Megumin's love life. Moreover, like her closest friend, Dodonko is a mean girl, who enjoys mocking and teasing her classmates, although she gets frustrated easily when countered. Futhermore, like her clanmates, Dodonko is pretty clever, but also cunning, pretending to be Yunyun's friend in order to extort her, even if it was for a good cause. Therefore, while she is a troublemaker, Dodonko is still appreciative and helpful.Lastly, unlike Funifura, Dodonko is a coward, who doesn't excel at anything, to the point of not remembering in what she is the foremost for her self-introdution.
-Arue: Like all Crimson Demons, Arue has brunette hair (black in the novels) and red pupils. She has shoulder-length hair drills. Also, she is consistently described as voluptuous, hardly looking the same age as her classmates.Arue usually wears the Red Prison uniform, consisting of a pink shirt dress, a knee-length black cloak and a red and orange-striped tie, alongside black stockings, boat shoes, a purple bat-clip at the back of her head (in the anime she uses a ribbon) and the same eyepatch as Megumin.Arue is a severe case of chūnibyō even among the Crimson Demons, behaving and talking in a "composedly dramatic" way, always speaking in a phlegmatic fashion while her performance protects a strong stage presence. She puts so much effort into her acting that Arue barely displays any spontaneous reaction, unless she feels extreme rage, despair or disgust, like the times she met Kazuma. Furthermore, Arue, as an aspiring author, is very inventive, often creating fake stories and narratives in order to entertain her fellows, like her eyepatch background. However, she is also a NEET, as Arue spends all day and night locked-up at home writing her manuscripts, and even when she didn't admit her goal of becoming a professional author yet, Arue still put a lot of effort on her writing craft. Arue is also very attached to her works, being sensitive to criticism and feeling bitter if her manuscripts are damaged or destroyed, since she works hard on them. Thus her works are Arue's weak spot, since any threat against her manuscripts can reduce her to tears. She is interested in real-life events and people that can used in her works too, such as Megumin's adventures and Yunyun. Arue is also very prideful of her overdeveloped body, bragging about her personal growth and calling herself as the "most voluptuous among the Crimson Demons" in her self-introduction, while striking poses that emphasize these features.
-Nerimaki: Nerimaki like other Crimson Demons has red eyes and black hair that she grew to waist-length. When she studied in the Red Prison, Nerimaki wore the school uniform, consisted of a pink shirt dress, a knee-length black cloak and a red and orange-striped tie, alongside black stockings and boat shoes. While working at the pub, Nerimaki wears a waitress outfit. As a Crimson Demon, Nerimaki is very shrewd, and as the proud daughter of a barkeep, she is a dealer with a great business acumen as well, who seeks and seizes opportunities to make a profit, the reason why Nerimaki can be very greedy. Moreover, she is a lively barmaid who welcomes her family's pub customers warmly and deals with the daily sexual harrasment of the drunks with patience. Lastly, like all Crimson Demons, Nerimaki has a chūnibyō personality, being obsessed with cringe-worthy poses, often researching them during her free time, also calling herself the "foremost barkeep's daughter of the Crimson Demons" in her chūni self-introduction.
Teachers: -Pucchin: Pucchin is a middle-age man with black hair, red eyes, and some stubble on his face. His attire consists of a tunic, trousers and leather boots. On days where he takes his class training in magic, he wears a cape and wields a magical rod.Like the rest of his clan, Pucchin has a chūnibyō personality, making him a reckless attention seeker who has rude manners. Therefore whenever teaching, he often enacts and encourages his students to speak out while flaunting a cool pose. And despite being a strict teacher who likes sticking to the rules, Pucchin is also ready to relax on them if the students give a chūnibyō enough excuse. He repeatedly mentions his wish to one day usurp the Headmaster's position as Red Prison's principal, and is described as one of the worthless citizens of the Crimson Demon Village.[2]Having taught at Red Prison for years and gaining an ambition to become its principal one day, Pucchin eventually became the homeroom teacher of Megumin's class, though during the commencement ceremony he made the decision to have the Headmaster dragged away so that his commencement speech would be stopped before it drones on until the next day.[3] He soon took interest in Megumin and Yunyun who respectively came first and second on grades, though when it came to philosophical questions regarding the clan's behaviour and use of magic, Arue who emphasised coolness had his favour. And during physical education lessons where his 11 students formed pairs for exercises, Pucchin regularly had to pair up with the loner Yunyun who kept having trouble finding a partner among her classmates.
-The Headmaster: The Headmaster is an old man sporting long greying hair, beard, moustache, and eyebrows, who in addition to round orange-tinted glasses wears a set of wizard's hat and robes of peculiar design, along with wielding a magical rod also used as a walking stick. The Headmaster seems to be a senile old man, who likes to recite book series for hours on end. He also has chūnibyō tendencies, which makes him a reckless attention seeker.
He is described as one of the worthless citizens of the Crimson Demon Village. As the longstanding principal of Red Prison who grew tulips in the schoolyard[2] (and in the anime engaged in worthless pursuits such as the petrification of Gargoyles to display as "bonsai"),[3] it became a tradition for the Headmaster to give long, dreary speeches based on book series at the commencement ceremonies for new students that may drone on until the next day. By the time the class which included Megumin and Yunyun got enrolled, however, some of the faculty like Pucchin had already learned to drag him out early in the speech despite his protests.[1]
Red prison: An academy that enrolls into gender-specific classes young Crimson Demons who have not yet learned magic, students will be taught all sorts of magical knowledge and combat skills while getting supplied with potions to level up their skill points so they can learn advanced magic. Once a student learns any type of magic, they will graduate and be considered an independent archwizard. Since the school issues each of its students an Adventurer Card upon enrollment, when they head to the Adventurer Guilds for signing up as adventurers after graduation, the process only entails having their cards and stats verified, while the registration fee as well as the steps involving a scan by a card-generating magic item can be skipped.
Crimson demon village: The village is home to the Crimson Demons and is the birthplace of Megumin and Yunyun. Located within a forest filled with dangerous monsters, people rarely travel there by foot, despite there being a well-trodden path leading to it, preferring magic methods such as Teleportation. Due to being a rather small village, many residents have specialized tasks reminiscent of small communities pre-urbanization in both North American colonies and Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. There is a tailor, baker, fisherman, a tapster, and even a fortune teller (world-specific), while some are unemployed. The main economic activity of the Crimson Demon community is tourism, as several "tourist attractions" exist within the village and its vicinity, obtained by the inhabitants to allure people into sightseeing there.[2] The names of these attractions, along with some local businesses, which, despite being alluring, are, in most cases, totally bogus, were given by "the most intelligent Crimson Demon" for attracting customers from outside the village. The village is usually under successive attacks from the Devil King's Army and monsters,[4] being constantly destroyed (sometimes by its own inhabitants).[5] However, it is always easily rebuilt by the villagers using Earth Golems and summoned Demons.
Crimson Demons: The most defining physical traits of every member of the Crimson Demons are their brunette hair (black in the novel), pale skin and red eyes, the latter of which will glow vibrantly when they're excited. They are also born with a bar code tattoo in a random place of their body (Yunyun's is in her inner thigh while Megumin's is at her buttock) as a result of being artificially-modified humans. The Crimson Demon women are also renowned by their beauty, and most of them are well-endowed. They're all chūnibyō, hence their weird names and demeanor. The Crimson Demons usually act in a very melodramatic and eccentric way, and are fantasy-prones. They are impetuous too, as well as obsessed by "coolness", which is combined with delusions of grandeur, as they often declare themselves the "foremost" of something of their tribe. Crimson Demons are also attention seekers. They also like to strike cringeworthy poses, have catchphrases and they do self-introductions for the ones they have just met. For them, a signature pose and catchphrase are extremely important, as the latter is like the last words or the quote of a lifetime.[1] Like most chūni people, many Crimson Demons are also NEETs, not working at all or just working barely enough to survive. According to Kazuma, if they weren't NEETs, they could have already taken over the world. The Crimson Demons were created by the same creator who made the Destroyer. In light of the high demand for enhancement surgeries in the Kingdom of Noise, an improvement coupon to become a Crimson Demons were given as a prize in a gachapon machine in the Research Laboratory along with the prototype Playscation and Game Girl Color, in order to select the subjects. The surgery was a resounding success and the resulting new race had an extremely high Intelligence and Magical Power. In regards to their chūnibyō tendencies, the people who were selected to undergo the operation all had this characteristic by complete happenstance. This resulted in their red eyes, strange names, and a tribe name, all a request by them to their benefactor.
Children begin attending the village's school at 12 and are only considered adults when they gain the necessary 30 skill points to learn Advanced Magic, which represents their adulthood. Otherwise, a Crimson Demon who doesn't know Advanced Magic is considered immature and a joke. To this extent, skill-up potions are handed out as rewards for academic achievements, which means demonstrating knowledge in chūnibyō-esque behavior or magic, both core tenets of Crimson Demons society. The other way skill points are gained is by farming levels, where the teacher of the class freezes the various dangerous monsters in the forest surrounding the village and the students kill them as they are subdued. Children are expected to either become adventurers or succeed their parents in whatever job the latter performs. Similar to their other attributes resulting from chūnibyō-ness, they all claim to be the "foremost (job) in the village," or that they hail from the "number one (store) in the village," both of which are technically true as they are the only ones who do these jobs in the area.
Once a Crimson Demon reaches their old-age, they depart from the village in a journey in order to find and fight a stronger adversary, so they can have a "heroic death", having their names written in their "Chronicles of the Crimson Demons". Otherwise, the elder will be considered a coward.
