The hall was full, rows of nobles wrapped in heavy furs and glittering jewels pressed together on obsidian benches. The silence was so absolute it felt like a scream. At the front, the space reserved for the dead remained empty, yet that emptiness carried weight: Queen Danda’s absent throne, the pedestal where Gamon’s folded banner should have rested. Every absence tightened around Bran’s chest.

He stood motionless at the altar, the curved plates of his ceremonial armor reflecting the blood-soaked colors of the stained glass. White scales showed through the gaps in the metal, their sheen duller than usual. A cloak of snow-deer fur draped over his broad shoulders, and his horns bore the golden crown with the ease that only a king possessed. From his lips escaped only a faint stream of icy vapor, betraying the effort it took to contain the turmoil threatening to crack his composure.

Kaelan, leader of the Onyx cult, approached with slow steps, holding the ritual tome against his chest. His voice was about to echo through the chapel, but Bran barely heard him. His glacial eyes were fixed on the entrance, where the red carpet cut through the black stone floor like a wound made beautiful.

Dragonheart appeared there, and for a heartbeat the world seemed to collapse inward, straight into the king’s chest.

Bran took a second longer than expected before speaking. Not for lack of words, that had never been the problem, but because saying certain things out loud had always felt more dangerous than facing a war.

His tone settled, heavy as stone.

“Today, many here see politics. They see protection, treaties, fear of what comes from outside. Let them. I see something else.”

He extended a clawed hand, not touching yet, only offering.

“I see someone who chose to stay when running would’ve been easier. Someone who carries a name others tried to rip away from them. Someone who is family, even when blood says otherwise.”

His voice lowered, just enough to sound less like a decree and more like a confession.

“I don’t promise lightness. Or simple days. Pandrake wasn’t made for that, and neither was I.”
