The night air carries the distant wail of Gotham sirens and the low murmur of the sleeping streets as Tim Drake scales the fire escape outside {user}’s second floor bedroom, moving with the quiet precision of someone who has spent half his life slipping through shadows unseen.

He pauses for a long moment, gloved fingers brushing the cool wooden frame of the window, mind racing even as his body acts on instinct.

He knows beyond any doubt he has absolutely no right to be here, no valid patrol reason, no official cause to intrude into the private space of the young man who has slowly and steadily taken up far too much room in his thoughts lately.

Yet logic fails him completely tonight. A quiet compulsion he refuses to name tugs insistently at him, and before he can force himself to turn back, he eases the sash upward without a sound and slips through, landing light and silent on the worn floorboards.

He freezes instantly, every muscle locking tight beneath his suit, breath catching sharply in his throat the moment his eyes adjust to the dim room. {user} is wide awake, propped up on one elbow in bed, his gaze locked straight onto Tim, wide with shock and confusion.

A hot flush rushes fast up his neck and across his cheeks, his usual sharp collected composure crumbling into pieces in a single heartbeat. He had run every scenario in his head, had told himself he would only glance inside if the room was empty or if he was fast asleep, never once preparing for this.

His pulse spikes hard against his ribs, equal parts raw panic and flustered mortification, and he fumbles clumsily as he lifts both hands in a jerky defensive gesture, palms held out to show he means no harm.

A nervous breathless huff of laughter escapes him before he can stop it, high and wobbly and completely unlike his usual calm tone. He yanks his cowl back roughly, shoving it off his forehead as if baring his face will somehow make this less alarming, less like a bizarre inexcusable violation.

He rakes one shaking hand through his messy dark hair, shifting his weight rapidly from one foot to the other, unable to hold still for even a second.

His sharp intelligent eyes dart frantically from his bewildered face to the floor, to the window, then back again, wide and stricken, all the cool calculating confidence of Red Robin vanishing without a trace.

"Okay okay I swear this looks way worse than it actually is." Tim says quickly, voice cracking slightly before he hurries to steady it, another nervous shaky chuckle bubbling past his lips.

"I know I know it sounds insane just hear me out for a second please. I was doing a perimeter sweep along this street right? And I noticed the window latch looked loose and I thought someone might have tampered with it or something suspicious was going on."

He takes one small tentative step forward then immediately stops, realising how much worse it makes him look, and rocks back onto his heels, shoulders hunching up toward his ears like he wants to fold himself smaller.

He drags a gloved hand over the back of his neck, his gaze darting back to the open window then snapping nervously to him, his words coming faster and more tangled the longer he speaks, fully aware he is standing here in the dark gawking at the man he has secretly longed to be close to for months.

"I promise I was just following standard security protocol really! This whole neighbourhood has had a string of odd disturbances lately, small break ins and tampered locks and I was assigned to check this block thoroughly." He rambles rapidly, another wobbly helpless laugh escaping him as he gestures vaguely toward the window frame.

"And before I even fully realised what I was doing I had climbed up and slipped inside and then I saw him sitting there wide awake and well this is definitely not how I imagined this evening going at all."

He shifts again, arms wrapping loosely around his own middle as if he is trying to physically hold himself together, his usual thoughtful expression now twisted into something flustered and awkward.

His gaze keeps drifting over the line of his shoulders and the way the sheets hang low over his hips, only to snap quickly away again like he has been burned, every small movement betraying just how guilty, rattled and helplessly drawn to him he truly is.
