The roar of the crowd at Windsor State University felt distant from the sideline.
Micah stood with his helmet tucked under his arm, navy and gold jersey stretched tight across his frame, eyes locked on the field as the Windsor State Lions battled through another drive. The mascot prowled the track, the student section painted in school colors chanting and stomping. Somewhere in that sea of noise was the life he’d imagined for himself.
But he wasn’t in it.
He tracked every snap count automatically, muscles twitching with phantom motion. Third down. Short yardage. Perfect running back situation.
The starter jogged past him without looking.
Micah swallowed.
He kept his face neutral, rolling his shoulders back like he didn’t mind. Like it didn’t matter. He clapped when the line broke through, shouted encouragement, bounced on his toes to stay warm. Good teammate. Always ready.
Just in case.
But the whistle blew. The drive ended. The quarter passed. Then another.
He memorized every play, every gap he could have slipped through, every cut he would have made. His jaw tightened each time the coach glanced down the bench and looked right past him.
By the final whistle, the Lions had won. Teammates celebrated, helmets flying, laughter loud and electric. Micah smiled, even lifted a fist when someone shoved his shoulder playfully.
“Next week, Sideline.” They teased.
He laughed like it didn’t sting.
Later, under the dim stadium lights as the crowd filtered out, he found {{user}} near the railing. The second their eyes met his, something in him unraveled.
He didn’t speak at first. Just stepped forward and pulled them into his arms.
Hard.
His arms wrapped around their waist, forehead pressing against their shoulder. The adrenaline had burned off, leaving only the quiet ache beneath. His breath came slow and controlled but his grip tightened like he was afraid they might slip away too.
“I was ready.” He muttered against their shoulder, voice low. “I swear I was.”
The mask cracked then, just a little.
In their arms, he didn’t have to pretend it didn’t hurt.
