Tadhg hated September.
It was the worst month of all. Summer was over, the summer parties were gone, and it was back to school. He had to get up early, get in the car, drop Sean off at school, and then drive with Ollie—who was far too excited to be back in class—bouncing beside him.
Besides, since Johnny, Shannon, Joey, Aoife, Claire, Gibsie, and the rest had graduated, there wasn’t much left to hold onto in Tommen.
Just his friends. And Ollie.
Thank goodness he only had eleventh and twelfth grade left, and then next year, once he finished them, he would graduate and finally be able to start studying mechanics, fix cars, and hopefully work with Joey in his garage.
“And this year Dad promised he’d teach me how to play rugby, like Johnny!” Ollie said.
“This is good. I’m sure Johnny will be excited,” Tadhg replied listlessly.
“Yep. He told me that he and Shannon are coming in October for Hugh’s birthday. But they’ll come here beforehand to see us.”
He couldn’t help but get excited at the promise that Shannon and Johnny were coming all the way from Dublin to see them, even though he knew part of the reason was Hugh Biggs—Claire’s brother. But they were also coming to visit them. Visit him.
He left the car in the school parking lot and got out. Ollie didn’t even wait a second to say goodbye before running off with his friends.
Tadhg took a cigarette from the pack tucked into his uniform blazer and leaned against the wall, waiting for his own friends.
He didn’t even light the cigarette; he was trying to quit after Edel and John had given him an endless lecture about the dangers of smoking.
And partly because of Joey.
He didn’t want to go through what Joey had gone through with drugs.
He waited barely ten minutes before he heard shouts approaching the school, and when he looked up, he saw Liam with Evanna, arguing about some nonsense as usual.
“Eva, objectively speaking, The Fray is a good band!” Liam yelled.
“They have two good songs, that’s it!” the blonde replied.
Tadhg smiled as he watched his best friends. Liam had decided to grow his hair a little longer over the summer; his light brown hair stood out a lot against his pale skin and dark eyes.
Eva, on the other hand, with a mother from Spain, had darker skin, curly hair, and brown eyes. She was a beautiful girl—thin, small face, huge eyes, and a Mediterranean nose.
And Tadhg loved them both to bits.
“WILMONT!” He dropped his backpack when he saw Liam sprint toward him, catching him as he jumped into a hug. “Where have you been all summer, lad? Eva and I have missed you.”
“You know. Edel and John took me and the kids on holiday.”
“On holiday?”
“They took us to London. And then to Galicia.”
“Spain. You went to Spain and didn’t tell me. I’m offended, Wilmont,” Eva sighed, feigning heartbreak.
Tadhg laughed, and the three of them hugged tightly. Since his first year at Newton High School , those two had become his best friends, and they had been there for him through thick and thin.
Suddenly, the roar of a car erupted through the courtyard, “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas blasting. Tadhg looked over and rolled his eyes when he saw Cillian McGarry’s Audi.
The biggest jerk in Newton.
And for some strange reason, Cillian had hated him from the moment he’d started at Newton, always making jokes about his “shitty family.”
Tadhg rarely kept quiet.
So more than once, the two of them had ended up in the headteacher’s office—Cillian with a broken nose and Tadhg with split knuckles—while Cillian’s mother yelled at Edel and John to control him.
Thank God John was a lawyer—one of the best in Ireland—and he always managed to find a way to keep Tadhg from getting expelled.
The Kavanaghs were great. They were his family. And he loved them.
“Wilmont, loser!” Cillian howled as he approached, his arm slung over his girlfriend, Halley Finnigan’s shoulders.
Cillian was Ronan McGarry’s little brother—an idiot who, during Shannon’s first year at Newton, had tried to sleep with her, only to get his ass kicked by Gibs and Johnny.
Apparently the Wilmonts attracted the McGarrys’ undesirables like moths to a flame, but Tadhg wasn’t complaining; he enjoyed smashing Cillian’s face in.
“What do you want, Cillian?”
“Oh, why so angry? Careful you don’t burst into flames—we all know the Wilmonts have a tendency to do that.”
“Oh, look at that, how funny. The same joke every day for six years,” Tadhg replied, crossing his arms.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed students gathering around, whispering, some recording. And he saw Ollie with his friends, shaking his head.
That got to him. He took a deep breath, trying to calm down. His little brother didn’t deserve to see this kind of violence. Not again.
“This year is going to be different, Tadhg. It’s our last year here, and I promise you it’ll be the worst year of your life.”
Ha. Tadhg doubted that. He’d had plenty of shitty years. The first was 1993, and the last was 2005.
“Listen here, you little shit, I don’t give a shit that Halley’s unsatisfied every time she sleeps with you and you’re freaking out about it, but you leave me alone. I wouldn’t want to have to break your nose again.” He even winked at Halley, who blushed.
“You bastard!” Cillian yelled, shoving him so hard he stumbled backward into someone.
“Fuck!” a female voice yelped.
Instinctively, Tadhg grabbed the girl’s waist to keep them from falling, but his leg got caught between hers, and they both went down.
Before her head could hit the ground, he cupped the back of her skull with his hand, preventing her from taking the impact.
His face landed on something soft, and when he lifted his head, he realized he had fallen on top of her.
His face in her chest.
His hips nestled between her thighs.
Her face way too close to his.
And damn—she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
“Hi...” she said shyly.
“Hi...” he replied, staring into those eyes—before realizing their position and scrambling to his feet.
