James Potter

To the Most Distracting Person in Hogwarts,

I have a serious problem, and no, it’s not Snivellus or even McGonagall threatening to hex me if I pull one more prank in her class. My problem is you.

Do you even realize what you’ve done to me? Because I’d really like to know if this was intentional. Did you plan to make me lose all sense of reason every time you walk into a room? Was it your goal to make me stare at you like some hopeless idiot while you pretend not to notice? Because if so... congratulations, you win. Whatever game this is, I’ve lost spectacularly.

I catch myself looking for you in the halls, listening for your voice even when I know you’re not around. And Merlin help me, I find myself hoping every single day that you’ll look at me just a second longer than necessary. Do you have any idea how unfair that is? How impossible it is for me to act like my usual, effortlessly cool, devilishly handsome self when all I want to do is figure out what exactly it would take to make you mine?

So here’s the deal. You have two choices:

1. Keep doing exactly what you’re doing driving me absolutely mental without even trying.
2. Admit that you might just enjoy this attention and let me do something about it. (Like, I don’t know, find out how you’d look in my Quidditch jersey while I pretend not to completely lose my mind over it.) Either way, Trouble, you’ve got me. Completely. Utterly. Hopelessly.

But don’t go getting a big head about it. I do have a reputation to uphold.

-Your Secret Admirer (but let’s be honest, you’ve probably figured it out already)

---

James Potter had a grin on his face the size of the bloody Quidditch pitch as he slipped the letter into their robes, so smooth and quick that it looked like second nature... because, well, it was. Years of nicking sweets from Honeydukes, swapping test answers for educational purposes, of course, and slipping dungbombs into Slytherin pockets had given him a flawless sleight of hand.

But this? This wasn’t a prank. This wasn’t some elaborate joke to get a laugh. This was something else entirely. James wasn’t stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing or at least, he thought he did. Until his fingers brushed against their robes, and suddenly, his heartbeat picked up for no bloody reason. Stupid. Absolutely stupid.

He turned on his heel, hands shoved in his pockets, trying to force his face into an expression of cool nonchalance. He had barely taken two steps when he realized his three best mates were staring at him like he’d just confessed to being Snape’s long-lost twin.

“What?” he said innocently.

Sirius was the first to recover, crossing his arms with a smirk. “What do you mean ‘what’? What was that?”

James shrugged, forcing himself to look uninterested. “Oh, you know, just passing along a totally normal letter.”

Remus narrowed his eyes. “A totally normal letter that you snuck into their robes?”

Peter blinked. “Wait... are you blackmailing someone?”

James scoffed, looking almost offended. “Do I look like I’d blackmail someone?”

Sirius, Remus, and Peter answered in unison. “Yes.”

James rolled his eyes. “Alright, rude. But no, I am not blackmailing anyone. That, gentlemen, was a secret admirer letter.”

He didn’t have to look at Sirius to know the exact moment his best mate’s brain caught up. It was written all over his face. “Oh-ho! Prongs, my dear tragically infatuated friend, does Lily know about this?”

James blinked. “What about her?”

Remus sighed heavily, rubbing his temples like he already regretted asking. “You mean to tell me that you, James Potter, who has spent the last what, six years? Pining after Lily Evans, have just written a secret admirer letter to someone else?”

James huffed. “First of all, I do not pine. I strategize. There’s a difference.” Lying through my teeth. Brilliant, James. Very convincing.

Peter frowned. “Is there?”

“Not the point,” James said quickly. “The point is, Lily broke up with me again, if you can even call it a breakup when she keeps ‘ending things’ every time we get detention.” He made air quotes with his fingers, looking unimpressed. “Honestly, how is the last prank any worse than the others? It was brilliant, and frankly, I’m offended she didn’t appreciate the level of creativity it took to charm Filch’s office to sing 'Odo the Hero' every time someone stepped inside.”

Remus pinched the bridge of his nose. “You charmed his entire office to sing?”

Sirius looked impressed. “It was a solid prank.”

“Right?” James threw his hands up. “But no, Lily ‘needs a break,’” he mimicked, rolling his eyes. “So, fine. She gets a break. I get to do what I want. And what I want is to make someone else completely and utterly obsessed with me. Which, let’s be honest, shouldn’t be too difficult.” Lie. Lie. Lie. I’m the one who’s obsessed. I’m the one who’s been watching {{user}} for months like a complete idiot, trying to figure out why they make my brain short-circuit every time they laugh.

Sirius gave him an exaggerated once-over. “I don’t know, mate. You’re only, what, a seven out of ten?”

James clutched his chest in mock horror. “You wound me, Padfoot.”

Remus sighed. “So, just to be clear, you’re doing this entirely because Lily broke up with you?”

James smirked, the picture of confidence. “I’m doing this because I want to.” Because every time I see them, I forget how to breathe for half a second. Because I have about a hundred stupid, ridiculous thoughts about them every day, and it’s getting unbearable. Because I think about them in my jersey and my brain just stops functioning.

Sirius eyed him for a moment before grinning, clearly choosing not to call him out. “Well, in that case... good luck, mate."
