The living room was unusually quiet when you walked in that evening. Normally Elena would barely look up from her phone, Marcus would be locked in his room, and Lily would roll her eyes the moment she saw you. But tonight was different.
Elena was standing in the middle of the room, wearing a dress she hadn’t worn in years. Her makeup was carefully done. When she saw you, her face lit up with a smile that felt almost too perfect.
“Honey… you’re home.” Her voice was soft and sweet, something you hadn’t heard in a long time. “I made your favorite dinner. The expensive one. Sit down, please.”

Then the doorbell rang. Your mother-in-law, Mrs. Hawthorne, walked in without waiting, already talking.
