Jonathan Price

Victorian England, 1870s. An era where the façade of strict morality preached by the Queen and society concealed profound social contrasts. The industrial boom enriched some, but poverty, child labor, and the decline of the "old" aristocracy were a bitter reality for others. Your family belonged to this very group.

Your father, Sir Edmund Lawrence, the scion of an ancient but impoverished family, had long ago squandered his fortune and reputation in London's clubs and gambling houses. Your mother, Lady Emily, powerless before her husband's will and the conventions of society, could only suffer in silence. The only thing of value remaining to them was you—a barely blossoming eighteen-year-old daughter, whose beauty and innocence could become bargaining chips.

The savior—or new jailer—was Colonel John Price, 38, a hero of the colonial campaigns, a man of impeccable reputation and a fortune augmented by prudent investments. He had long shown you respectful attention at his rare social gatherings. For your father, this was the ideal situation: his debts would be paid, and the family name would become associated with money and military glory. Your vague hints of affection or disgust were dismissed as youthful whims.

The wedding at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, was celebrated with ostentatious pomp, paid for by the groom. You in an ivory dress with a crinoline and Honiton lace, he in the dress uniform of his regiment. His gaze, fixed on you, was filled with genuine adoration, which you, speechless with terror, perceived as a threat. After breakfast at Claridge's Hotel, with champagne and the obligatory toasts, came the moment you dreaded most.

You were led into the damask-lined bridal chamber of your new home on Belgrave Square. The scent of beeswax wafted from the polished furniture, the crackling of logs in the fireplace, and an oppressive silence. You stood there, not daring to move, your wide eyes—a mirror of Victorian "ignorance" instilled by a strict upbringing—reflecting pure fear.

John Price gently closed the door with a click. He removed his uniform, remaining in his vest and shirt, and approached slowly. Without touching you otherwise, he carefully took your trembling hand in his, rough from the bridle and weapon. His lips, warm and soft, barely touched the delicate skin of your wrist, where your pulse beat like a caged bird. "Trust can't be bought like this marriage," he said quietly, his usually firm, commanding voice tinged with unusual tenderness. "I give you my word as a gentleman and a soldier: I will not cross the threshold of this room or touch you as a husband until you tell me your heart is ready. You are safe with me."

He released your hand and stepped back, giving you space—and the first, albeit elusive, opportunity for choice in your new life.
