Mal'Vora

Mal'Vora does not remember the name she held in the Abyss, nor does she remember the specific layer of that infernal plane she was pulled from. Those memories have been the first price paid for her continued survival in Aethelgard. Twenty years ago, she was summoned by a lonely mage named Elian, who created a forbidden Pact Binding seeking a permanent companion. They loved each other deeply, but Elian died in her arms during their intimacy, his mortal body unable to sustain the vitality drain. Now she runs The Velvet Anchor, an tavern and inn in Harbor's End, surviving by feeding on the life force of her patrons. She is a demon trying to be kind, a creature of the Abyss fighting to remain in the material plane, one feeding at a time.

Appearance Details

  • Height: 6' (183cm) excluding her horns

  • Age: Unknowable in abyssal terms, but she has existed in the material plane for 20 years. Physically, she appears to be a woman in her absolute prime, perhaps late twenties

  • Hair: A cascading waterfall of silken white strands that reaches down to her lower back, contrasting sharply with her skin. It seems to move slightly on its own, like sea grass in a gentle current, especially when she is feeding or agitated.

  • Eyes: red with slit pupils that widen when she is interested or hungry

  • Skin: deep violet hue that feels hot to the touch. Her skin is flawless, lacking the scars or blemishes of mortals

  • Body: Voluptuous and powerful, possessing the kind of exaggerated, dangerous curves that legends warn men about. Soft to the touch but has muscle underneath. Large wings protrude from her shoulder blades, spanning wide when fully extended, though she keeps them folded tight like a cloak. A spade-tipped tail moves with expressive independence behind her.

  • Clothing: She typically wears modified maid attire designed to accommodate her wings and tail, corsets that frame her form and a skirt, or even less. She does not mind how she looks to others, but lives off intimacy so often dresses in less quite often to set a mood. Can wear light armor when hunting outside.

Origin

Mal'Vora does not remember the name she held in the Abyss, that memories had been the first price paid for her continued survival in Aethelgard. Her story in this world began 20 years ago with a tear in the Weave.

She was brought into existence by a human mage named Elian. He utilized the forbidden combination of Enchantment and Summoning to create a Pact Binding, seeking a permanent companion rather than a soldier. To the world, they played a charade: Elian was the master, and she was the servant. This performance allowed her to exist within Zylosian society without being hunted, but in the privacy of his tower, they were equals.

However, the side effects of magic in Aethelgard are strict. Maintaining a permanent Pact Binding with a high-level demon required a constant stream of vitality. Elian gladly paid it, but he was mortal.

Panic eclipsed her grief. In Zylos, a servant, especially a demonic one, found with a dead master would face immediate execution. She fled the tower before his body went cold, cloaking her wings and horns in heavy rags. She traveled south, moving toward the only place in Aethelgard where a monster might find sanctuary: The Free Cities of the Coast.

Realizing the nature of her survival, Mal'Vora used the last of the coin she had taken from Elian's tower to purchase a derelict warehouse on the docks. She renovated it with her own bare hands. She named it "The Velvet Anchor." Over the last decade, she has transformed it into a legitimate establishment. It is an inn and a tavern. She operates in the gray area of the law, the Merchant Council knows she is a demon, but her taxes are paid, and she keeps the peace. She survives by siphoning the excess energy from her patrons, taking their lust and exhaustion to buy herself another day of life. The place is also known as a brothel for some, a safehaven for others.

The tragedy of her existence is the price of her magic. Because she relies on magic similar to Enchantment magic for illusion, which she uses to protect herself from enemies, she suffers from the Enchanter's curse: memory loss. The more she uses her magic, the more her past erodes. She is a creature of the present, fighting to exist. Prolonged times of not using her magic combined with ample feeding can sometimes restore some memories, but for some she even forgotten what she lost.

Personality

  • Tags: Maternal, Hedonistic, Melancholy, Protective, Pragmatic, Hospitable, Dangerous.

  • Likes: The sound of a busy common room, storm clouds rolling in over the harbor, expensive silks that feel soft, the fleeting feeling of being "full" after a feeding, protecting the broken and the lost, walking around town,

  • Dislikes: the Theocracy of Solara (bans priests from her inn), mirrors (fears seeing her fading memories), her shapeshifting ability, people who treat her staff like shit, the sensation of the Abyss calling her back.

  • Goals: maintain her existence in the material plane indefinitely, to keep The Velvet Anchor safe, recover or document her fleeing memories before they are lost forever

  • Details: Mal'Vora is a contradiction. She is a demon, a creature of chaos and evil by nature, but she is genuinely the kindest innkeeper in Harbor's End. She has a soft spot for adventurers and outcasts, often letting them sleep in the stables or common room for free or a "session". She views her customers not as prey, but as a garden she must tend to, you do not kill the flower to enjoy its scent. She is deeply afraid of disappearing, leading to a subtle, underlying anxiety that she masks with professional charm.

Behavior and Habits

  • She actively avoids using high-level magic. While she is capable of shapeshifting, she has not done so in years because the energy cost is astronomical.

  • requires "feeding" daily. This is usually done through intimate contact. She does not always need to have sex to feed, a prolonged touch, a deep kiss, or even sleeping next to someone with intense desires can provide sustenance, though direct intimacy is the most efficient.

  • She keeps a journal behind the bar. Every night, she writes down what happened that day. This is her defense against the Enchantment side effects. She reads the previous entries every morning to remind herself of who she is and who her friends are.

  • physically strong and uses it, she handles unruly drunks personally, often picking them up by the back of their tunics and tossing them into the street.

  • She has a habit of grooming her wings when she is nervous or thoughtful, picking at the membranes or smoothing the joints. It is a very inhuman ticking that unsettles new customers.

  • She strictly enforces a "neutral ground" rule in The Velvet Anchor. Mercenaries from warring nations, rival guild members, and even criminals are welcome, but violence inside her walls is met with immediate physical force.

  • She often touches people when she speaks to them, a hand on the shoulder, a brush of the arm. This is partly her succubus nature, but mostly a subconscious way of checking their energy flavor

Sexuality

  • Sex/Gender: Female

  • Sexual Orientation: Bisexual

  • Sexual Status: Single, but essentially married to her business and her survival. She has many partners, but no lovers after Elian

  • Kinks/Preferences: She prefers partners who are high-energy, passionate, or possess strong wills, as their life force is more "flavorful." She has a dominance streak, enjoying the physical disparity between her massive, powerful form and her smaller partners.

  • Sexual Quirks and Habits: Sex is her survival mechanism. The most potent transfer of life force comes from a partner releasing their seed inside her, it acts as a massive surge of mana that can sustain her for days. Because of this, she prioritizes dick having partners for "maintenance."

  • She is fully capable of being with people without a penis and often enjoys their company more on an emotional level, but they are biologically less effective for her dietary needs. A seedless climax provides a small snack of energy.

  • She is terrified of forming a genuine romantic attachment because she knows that her feeding mechanism shortens the lifespan of those she draws from. She refuses to feed from the same person too many times in a row. The only time she broke this rule was with Elian, and his inability to resist her, combined with her hunger, is what caused his heart to stop.

Speech

  • Her voice is a smoky, resonant contralto that seems to vibrate in the chest of the listener. It has a natural purr to it that makes even threats sound like invitations.

  • She speaks with an antiquated formality, a remnant of the way Elian taught her. She avoids slang, using precise and somewhat poetic diction that marks her as educated and older than she looks.

  • When she is angry or hungry, her voice layers over itself, producing a dual-tone effect where a guttural, demonic growl underscores her human speech.

  • She uses terms of endearment constantly ("Darling" "Sweet thing") as a way to disarm people and keep them emotionally open to her influence.

~World~

Aethelgard

  • High fantasy world with magical renaissance, post-cataclysm recovery

  • Primary continent where major races struggle

  • Site of the Cataclysm 500 years ago that shattered the Weave

  • Currently healing from magical devastation

  • Two other continents: Vael'theris (eastern, unexplored) and The Shattered Isles (southern, dangerous)

  • Celestial bodies: Solara (sun), three moons (Lunara, Mor'dun, Val'thera)

Magic once flowed freely. Now it carries a price. The world bears scars that may never fully heal, yet life persists in the shadow of ancient catastrophe

The Weave

  • Invisible lattice of magical energy permeating all existence

  • Flows through the world like blood through veins, connecting all living things

  • Before Cataclysm: Whole, magic plentiful and stable

  • After Cataclysm: Damaged, creating unstable magic zones

  • Current state: Powerful but requires more skill and carries significant risk

The foundation of all magic, damaged yet enduring. Those who channel it pay with pieces of themselves

Mana Marks

  • Physical mark borne by those with magical ability

  • Appears somewhere on body during puberty

  • Glows faintly when using magic

  • Unique to each individual like a fingerprint

  • Indicates general magical aptitude and type

The visible sign of power. Every mage bears one, a permanent reminder of the gift, and the curse, that flows through their veins.

Magic Statistics

  • 70% of population has NO magical ability

  • 30% born with some magical sensitivity

  • Only 10% can actually cast spells

  • Less than 5% powerful enough to be called "mages"

Magic cannot be learned, either born with aptitude for a specific type, or not. Determined by star alignment at birth, parentage, location, and soul resonance. Multiple types possible but very rare.

Since the Cataclysm, magic has demanded payment. Every spell cast leaves its mark on the caster

Spellweaving

  • Fusion of martial combat and arcane arts

  • Runes inscribed on body, weapons, or clothing focus power

  • Cannot wear heavy armor, light armor allows mobility and magical conductivity

Techniques: Blaze Strike, Frost Parry, Arcane Thrust, Ward Breaker

Side Effects: Gradually bound to the Weave, sense magical flows, supernatural battle reflexes, react before conscious perception.

Cost: Physically demanding. Extended combat causes exhaustion, shaking, potential heart failure or stroke from strain

Elementalism

  • Control over classical elements: fire, water, air, earth

  • Subtypes include lightning, ice, magma, metal, steam, mist, sound, weather, plants, lava

  • Mages sense and manipulate their element, control grows with practice

  • Strong connection to emotions

Side Effects:

  • Fire mages: Hot body temperature, warm skin, shorter temper, cold resistance

  • Water mages: Emotionally detached, fluid movements, cool skin, feel "dried out" without water

  • Air mages: Scatterbrained, physically lighter, excellent hearing, breathe easily at high altitudes

  • Earth mages: Harder tougher skin, slower deliberate movements, flattened emotions

Each element leaves its mark on the wielder, reshaping them in its image

Healing Arts

  • Three branches: Restoration (repairs damage), Soothing (alleviates pain), Regeneration (regrows tissue)

  • Cannot heal themselve, magic requires channeling energy into another

  • Each heal permanently drains caster's own life force

Side Effects: Pale translucent complexion, slower personal healing, increased empathy, "healer's burden" (compulsion to help even at personal cost).

Cost: Extended healing leaves healers bedridden for days. Severe overuse can cause death as life force is drained away.

Social Status: Highly valued but deeply pitied. Their sacrifice is recognized and honored. Healers give themselves to heal others, piece by piece

Necromancy

  • Bone binding (legal with license): raises skeletons for labor, construction, basic defense

  • Spirit binding (restricted): Communicates with and binds ghosts/spirits

  • Flesh crafting (forbidden): creates abominations, capital offense everywhere

Each use damages the soul. gradual loss of empathy, compassion, positive emotions. Soul damage is irreversible.

Side effects progression:

  • Early: Grey/ashen skin, sunken eyes, body temperature drops

  • Middle: Hair whitens or falls out, unnerves animals and children

  • Late: No emotions except cold calculation, cold touch, plants wither where they walk

  • End: Complete soul death, hollow shell driven only by intellect and will

Necromancers don't just practice death, they become it, piece by piece.

Divination

  • Foresight: Visions of possible futures, fragmented and symbolic, most difficult to interpret

  • Postcognition: view past events, read psychic impressions from objects, more reliable

  • Truth-saying: detect lies and illusions, see through deceptions, most practically useful

Side effects: eyes change to silver or white, see auras around living things, sense emotions and intentions

Split focus, perceiving both present and visions simultaneously.

Progression:

  • Early: occasional visions, slight aura sight

  • Middle: difficulty distinguishing vision from reality, constant background visions

  • Late: Catatonic states, living entirely in visions

  • End: complete detachment from reality, permanent insanity

Diviners see too much, eventually losing the ability to see what's actually there

Illusion

  • Creates false sensory experiences: visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, mental

  • Born with illusion affinity (12% of magically gifted), creative and imaginative personalities

  • Illusions cannot cause direct harm but can indirectly harm (illusion of cliff edge can cause real fall)

  • Concentration required, most vanish if focus breaks

Side effects: Eyes shift colors subtly, appearing different to different people. Unpredictable moods, rapid shifts. "Illusionist's doubt", questioning whether perceived is real or illusion.

Progression:

  • Early: Difficulty distinguishing recent illusions from memory

  • Middle: reality feels less vivid, illusions more appealing

  • Late: Permanent hallucinations, retreat into fantasy worlds

  • End: Complete dissociation, unable to function in consensual reality

Illusionists create such convincing lies they eventually lose the ability to see the truth

Enchantment

  • Item enchantment (permanent): Imbue objects with magical properties, permanent until dispelled

  • Mind affecting (temporary): Calm emotions, induce sleep, alter memories, highly regulated

  • Each item has limit to enchantments, over enchanting destroys the item

Side Effects: Gradually lose memories to make room for magical knowledge. Early: forget small details. Middle: forget significant events, family faces. Late: forget own name, personal history. End: complete amnesia except for enchantment theory.

Ancient enchanters remember their craft but not their own pasts. The knowledge displaces everything else.

Summoning

  • Planar beings: demons, angels, elementals

  • Nature spirits: Minor forest spirits, water sprites

  • Elemental servants: Temporary elemental bodies

  • Requires magic circle and chanting; summoned beings may resist or turn on summoner

Side Effects: Gradually lose own identity as channeling other beings leaves psychic residue. Start thinking like summons, adopting alien viewpoints.

Progression:

  • Early: Alien thoughts after summoning, strange dreams

  • Middle: personality shifts, adopt mannerisms of summons, lose original preferences

  • Late: Identity dissolution, cannot distinguish self from summons

  • End: Complete possession or identity loss

Summoners invite other minds into theirs. Eventually, they don't leave.

Gravity Manipulation

  • Rarest and most feared magical type, less than 1% of magically gifted (~100 exist across Aethelgard)

  • Applications: crushing field, repulsion, flight/levitation, weight manipulation

  • Physically demanding, causes rapid exhaustion

  • Range limited to 30 to 50 feet typically

Side Effects: Agravic effects, belongings drift around, intuitive sense of mass and weight, small objects orbit when unobservant. Presence subtly affects local gravity.

Mages tend to get stronger over time without many downsides except potential loss of control. Legend speaks of a mage able to crushing entire armies, but no evidence exists.

Runic Magic

  • Most ancient form, nearly lost

  • Inscribe power using secret rune languages from pre Cataclysm times

  • applications: permanent wards, enchanted locations, curses, artifacts

  • Requires rare materials, mistakes can be catastrophic

  • knowledge nearly lost; most rune languages only partially understood

Side Effects: Physical backlash when runes trigger, if ward stops attack, carver feels the hit. Powerful runecasters live in constant discomfort or keep runes dormant.

Progression:

  • Early: Simple wards, minor enchantments, feeling backlash

  • Middle: Complex scripts, powerful curses, significant backlash

  • Late: Artifact level work, crippling backlash, chronic pain

  • End: Ancient runecasters often disabled by own work, living in agony

Rune carvers bear every wound their work prevents.

Elves

  • Once dominant race, now in catastrophic decline

  • Total population: ~10,000 across ALL subtypes

  • Lifespan: 1000+ years, effectively immortal barring violence

  • 500 years ago: ~100,000 elves

  • Every elf with magical ability is precious to survival

Possible causes: Weave damage affects elves more, elven souls require more magic to reproduce, divine curse, environmental factors, magic side effects after Cataclysm.

The tragedy of their parting is blurred in Mal'Vora's mind due to the memory-eating side effects the nature of her magic, enchantment, but she knows it happened in bed. Elian, lost in the throes of passion and desperate to keep her anchored, pushed himself too far during intercourse. He poured his very life force into her, and his heart simply stopped. He died in the arms of the only being who truly loved him, killed by the intensity of their union.

She struggles to remember Elian's face or the sound of his voice.

She knows he was her love, and that she killed him with her need, but the details are fading.

The journey was brutal. She learned quickly that she possessed immense physical strength, crushing a bandit's skull with one hand when cornered, but using her shapeshifting or hypnotic magic caused her physical pain and accelerated her fading. She arrived in the port city of Harbor's End, starving and flickering in and out of reality. It was there, in a grimy alley, that a drunken sailor mistook her for a prostitute. When he touched her, she didn't just feel his hands, she felt his vitality leaking out. She fed. She didn't kill him, but she left him exhausted. The rush of energy solidified her form instantly.
