Dragons are creatures that generate Magical Energy merely by breathing, their lungs acting as spiritual worlds, and they possess traits from other types of monsters. It is possible for a human to have the blood of a Dragon, whether induced artificially like King Arthur or from having Mixed-Blood like Elizabeth Báthory. Simply having their blood within them grants humans high level Magic Resistance able to easily dispel Magecraft from the Age of Gods, and King Arthur has a Magic Core that far surpasses the Magic Circuits of humans.

Differing from the Magic Circuits of regular humans, Artoria Pendragon and Siegfried when he was alive have a Magic Core (魔術炉心, Majutsu Roshin?) granted by their Dragon blood.[1][2] Its capacity is far greater than any human can achieve. While a Magus' body can be considered a machine which creates Magical Energy, Artoria's Magic Core acts as a factory which creates Magical Energy.[2]

Gray also gets a Dragon Magic Core after Artoria is summoned as Saber in the Fifth Holy Grail War, with the summoning affecting Gray's body due to her nature, and turning her more into a perfect clone of Artoria.[3]

Dragons and humans are generally incompatible with each other, but, while Dragons are creatures that devour humans by simply existing,[4] conflicts between them are for the most part caused by humans taking action first in order to gain something. Those who attack humans first would generally be looked down upon.[5]

Dragons possess language referred to as Dragon Language (竜言語, Ryū Gengo?) that can facilitate Magecraft like the construction of Golems, or even a labyrinth that functions as a Magical Workshop if they use their stockpiled treasures, though Gilgamesh notes that the creator Dragon being knowledgeable enough to do this is a praiseworthy but rare sight.[6] Dragons have an inherent ability to sense the destiny of others by looking at them, and use this skill to choose their mates.[7]

Dragons are essentially giant lumps of Magical Energy, and as such can absorb other sources of Magical Energy to grow stronger. The Elder Dragon encounter by Chaldea Security Organization with Gilgamesh was considered to have more Magical Energy than an A-rank Servant and may possess more power then the Evil Dragon Fafnir,[6] who is considered the "ultimate dragon" by Martha.[8] Dragons can even consume and absorb other Dragons to drastically raise their power and their size, enough that they are able to support the manifestation of a Singularity akin to a Holy Grail. However, cannibalistic Dragons are considered to be very rare, and though they are powerful such Dragons possess little intelligence.[9]

Dragons each have an attribute, and their strongest weapon, Dragon's Breath (ドラゴンブレス, Doragon Buresu?), capitalizes upon it by using their breath to spread it excessively over the wide area of effect as a torrent of Mana. Red Dragons carry flame, blue Dragons carry thunder, black Dragons carry acid, and Elizabeth Bathory carries soundwaves. There are also white Dragons, gold Dragons, silver Dragons and green Dragons, however it is unknown what kinds of breaths they can produce. The damage value, according to a certain rulebook, is the same as the constitution value of the Dragon. Due to having a constitution value which transcends that of humans by far, it is not unreasonable to think of a single Dragon being able to destroy a whole country when equally spreading the damage from its breath throughout a whole army.[10]

There are different types, the western Dragons being considered demons and the strongest of the Phantasmal Species, and Chinese Dragons (龍, Ryū?) being treated as divine existences and invincible beings that do not even need to fight. The Chinese Dragons do contain a rough spot, a Reverse Scale (逆鱗, Gekirin?) below their chins, that when touched, causes them to rage and devastate the earth with their rampaging power. It shows that even such perfect existences also display a deplorable side.[10]

Vritra Vritra, a True Dragon. Of the many Dragons, there exist a type known as True Dragons (真竜, Matatsu?). True Dragons are more akin to concepts than actual creatures due to being born of an abundance of a particular Human idea, such as Fafnir embodying Greed and Vritra embodying Drought. Considered both great lizards and formless demons all at once, defeating a True Dragon requires a person to commit all of one's being and ability to it; if a person can't pull up every single bit of strength built up in their life, the True Dragon will win and kill them. However, although a Dragon Slayer remembers killing their Dragon, they will struggle to remember how they exactly succeeded. Both Sigurd and Siegfried, when asked as to how they killed their Dragons, struggle to remember how and merely state that they were desperate to survive and forget anything else. For to face a Dragon is akin to telling the story of your whole life; describing the broad strokes is easy, but the finer details are hard to grasp.[11]

Deinos are considered at least part-Dragons.[12] Whether the Dinosaurs of Proper Human History are also considered part-Dragons is unknown.

The Dragon of Albion was the last Pure-Blooded Dragon (の純血竜, No Junketsu Ryū?) in the world. Modern Dragons are just animals, the result of the "Dragon Factor" (竜の因子, Ryū no inshi?) left behind by Dragons who emigrated to the Reverse Side of the World, and have adapted the Dragons' lifestyle while maintaining their own way of life and their own "Dragon Territories" (竜の生態, Ryū no Seitai?). Pureblood Dragons no longer exist in the world, besides Albion's corpse that is.[13] Servants, the Heroic Spirits of the Human History, are by themselves considered to be super existences. Amongst them, there are those whose Saint Graph are on different level, and the ones who have the highest levels even amongst the most exceptional ones are called Grand Servants. By those standards, Da Vinci states that Albion would be something like a Grand Class among all exceptional Dragons. Unlike Gods and Deities whose existence were given shape or even birth upon being observed or believed by others, Albion is a super existence that is alive since the very beginning of the world, a transcendental life form that possesses over 4.6 billion years of data within itself.

Dragon Kind (竜種, Ryūshu?) are considered the pinnacle of Phantasmal Species. They have members in all three classes of Phantasmal Species, and they are considered to be the greatest species within each corresponding class.

Due to there being Magical, Phantasmal, and Divine class Dragons, they have been involved with mankind since before the Age of Gods, and left many legends in the field of Thaumaturgy due to having freely intermixed with humans in the past.

She is considered the child of a human and the Great God Ibuki of Mount Ibuki (= Yamata no Orochi), and there is another theory where she is considered the heaven-sent child of Mount Togakushi (= Kuzuryuu). At any rate, she is the child of a Dragon God, possessing a shared background with Sakata Kintoki.
