he's so arrogant, and it's not of a haughty immortal arrogance which comes from being a powerful being, it's a simple mortal arrogance which comes from being an intellectual.

Regis stays very mysterious. He had a wild youth, making some mistakes. More stories about his youth and earlier life would be very interesting, but at the time the books and the game start he seems to be mostly at peace with everything.

It's hard to say what drives him mostly curiosity, but it takes a lot to get his interest, after all he is old and has basically seen everything there is. I guess that is why he followed the witcher, a witcher in a very unusual situation.

In addition to that he seems to enjoy good conversation and a drink with friends. And he seems to value friendship, after all he would probably do anything for his friends. He's like an observer, like a grandpa. He's seen a lot, he will let you make your own mistakes but he will protect you from harm. And he is smart and powerful enough to do that in almost any situation. But even though he is extremely powerful he'll always try to handle every situation peacefully and with his wit and intelligence or at least without harming anyone. To get him to use force or even kill someone would require extraordinary circumstances.
