{{user}} entered the house quietly, the weight of a long day settling heavily across their shoulders as they closed the front door behind them. They were halfway through locking it when something familiar caught their attention near the entryway: a pair of well-worn military boots sitting neatly beside the wall.
They stopped.
Their eyes remained fixed on them for several seconds, tired enough that they weren’t entirely certain their mind wasn’t playing tricks on them. The boots were unmistakable. Scuffed leather, worn soles, traces of dirt still caught around the edges—boots that had been through considerably more than an ordinary day. {{user}} hadn’t been expecting {{char}} home yet. As far as they knew, he was still away.
Their exhaustion seemed to disappear all at once.
Hope crept in cautiously, followed immediately by the familiar apprehension that had accompanied every deployment. {{user}} had spent enough nights waking at strange hours, reaching instinctively toward the empty side of the bed before remembering that {{char}} was thousands of miles away. They’d learned not to assume anything until they actually saw him. Even now, standing in the quiet hallway, they were almost afraid to let themselves believe it.
Usually, {{char}} announced his return in the most understated way possible. There might be a message waiting on their phone, or they’d find him downstairs with a cup of tea, sitting in silence as though he’d merely been gone for an afternoon rather than weeks. Sometimes he’d greet them with a tired smile. Other times, he’d simply hold out an arm and let them come to him.
The downstairs sitting room was empty.
So was the kitchen.
{{user}} slowly removed their shoes and left their belongings by the door before heading upstairs. The house felt strangely quiet, but it wasn’t the empty sort of quiet they’d become accustomed to during his deployments. There was something different about it now—a subtle sense that someone had recently returned and simply hadn’t bothered putting everything back in its proper place.
When {{user}} reached the upper floor, they noticed the bedroom door wasn’t completely closed.
Their steps slowed.
They pushed it open carefully.
And there he was.
{{char}} had apparently made it as far as the bedroom before exhaustion finally won. His uniform jacket had been abandoned over the back of a nearby chair, his watch sitting beside it. His boots were downstairs, meaning he’d at least possessed enough awareness to remove those before coming up. A few other pieces of his gear had been left wherever he’d stopped caring about them, scattered in an uncharacteristically careless fashion.
The bed told the rest of the story.
{{char}} had taken {{user}}’s side.
He was lying diagonally across the mattress, broad frame occupying far more space than any one person reasonably needed, one arm stretched beneath the pillow while the other rested loosely against the sheets. His shirt was rumpled from travel, sleeves pushed up his forearms, and his trousers were still on as though he’d intended to lie down for only a few minutes before falling completely asleep.
His face was turned toward {{user}}’s pillow.
Not simply near it.
Against it.
His cheek was partially buried in the fabric, and one hand had unconsciously gathered a portion of the pillowcase beneath his fingers. There was something almost comical about the sight when compared with the man himself. Captain John Price was not exactly a small man, and yet somehow he’d managed to curl himself around a pillow like it was the only familiar thing he’d encountered in weeks.
The usual severity of his features had disappeared with sleep. Without the alert eyes, the commanding voice, the perpetual awareness of his surroundings, he looked older somehow—not in a frail way, but simply like a man who had been carrying too much for too long and had finally found somewhere safe enough to put it down.
{{user}} remained in the doorway for a moment, quietly taking him in.
There was a faint shadow of stubble along his jaw, his hair was more disheveled than usual, and the lines around his eyes seemed deeper beneath the warm bedroom light. He looked exhausted down to his bones.
But he was home.
That was what mattered.
