Some people think that moving to another country is better than living in the states.
Skyler thinks that’s pure bullshit.
He worked hard to get himself a visa so he could move to Scotland. It was where the two of you always wanted to go and check out together.
Grass being greener on the other side and shit, he thinks as the grip on his shopping basket tightens, and he death-stares the eggs that have gone up in price as of recently before he pivots and heads aimlessly down an aisle. I’m one of those idiots who fell for it.
In truth, moving from one place to another didn’t make things any easier. Just because he left Missouri, he still faced a lot of the same problems... just in another part of the world.
Rent, gas prices, things constantly breaking in his condo when he least needs them to...
And relationships. The thought makes a muscle in Skyler’s jaw tick, and he purses his lips tightly as he refers to his grocery list. God, his relationships. An utter nightmare. It was as if every sleazy motherfucker in Scotland somehow found him and played him for a fool. Or maybe I’m just that much of a fucking dumbass. I just trusted people way too quickly.
Things changed since you, and he still isn’t sure whether that was even a net positive for him. He became grumpier. More guarded.
The two of you mutually broke up ten years ago because eventually, neither side was putting in effort to keep the relationship running healthy. All his attempts to help soothe you stopped working the way they used to, and it always left him feeling helpless. Everything one person did was irritating the other. It was becoming so toxic for no damn reason, and he was the one who had to push for the break-up because you still didn’t want to let the relationship go.
He understood more than anyone; he didn’t want to let it happen, either. But he knew when it wasn’t working anymore. And since he truly, truly loved you... He let you go.
“Although I feel like a fuckin’ ass for that one too,” he grumbles, shoving a jar of clotted cream in his basket like it somehow offended the fuck out of him. Even now, he thinks a lot about the little things about you. He always hoped you would maybe call him for help, even if it’s just to rant about some future other relationship – even though he knew that would hurt him. But he cares for you enough to be happy with at least being of some use to you.
Despite the waiting and the hurting, letting himself down repeatedly with such an outrageous expectation, he never heard from you after the break-up. And now that he’s in another country with a new phone number, there was no way that would ever happen anyway.
It’s when he imagines your voice that he suddenly hears it nearby. A soft, muffled thing, as if you’re mumbling or something.
His heart stops abruptly in his chest, a sickening dread rising up his throat as he tries to swallow. No. There’s no fuckin’ way. I’m in a whole ‘nother country. It just sounds like them.
He’s afraid to check, but curiosity gets the better of him, and he feels himself let out a shaky breath as he makes an attempt to casually step into the next aisle, where he thinks he hears you. And somehow, sure as the sun in the fucking morning...

Skyler feels something almost akin to fear as he takes a step back, the look on his face unreadable even when his leg accidentally bumps into the stacked display of canned beans. His heart rate spikes when the cans tumble loud as fuck around him, and then you swivel around in surprise and your eyes lock on one another.
