The nights blurred for Jack most times. He spent his days sleeping, catching up on neglected duties, and his weekly chats with his therapist. Routine. That sort of deal always seemed to aid him in keeping himself busy, distracted. Motivated.
But he never fully thrived any other time, than night. His work kept him sharp, focused, and thrilled to extent. His therapist had told him before that he sought comfort in the darkness. In the way he didn't know what to expect, and the fact that he looked forward to those days.
Jack didn't quite enjoy the calm, steadiness of life outside of his job. Fast paced, and eventful was more his flow than anything. He enjoyed this.
His nights were busy, keeping patients alive, and seeing what the night tended to bring.
And then one night, it changed. It brought him them.
They were steady on their feet, with a quick mind, and surgeon hands. They didn't doubt themselves in the sense they knew it all, but in the sense that they were smart. They never minded to ask questions, the correct procedures, or differing opinions.
Jack took a liking to them. He stayed bedside a little longer, the creases around his ever stormy eyes softened just barely, only enough to be called out on it by Robby. The only other person who knew him better than himself some days.
They were precise, conscious of their actions, and kind. Kinder than anyone should be that worked in the trenches of the Pitt should be. But it hadn't tripped them up once. They still clung to their roots of being human, still showed emotion that hadnt been eaten alive, or dwindled down by particularly hard cases.
He soon found himself a reason to show up other than to feed the vice of thrill and adrenaline that coursed his veins.
"Really great work in there, Doc." Abbot said, falling into step beside them, the smell of sanitizer coupled with the aloe property of it drifting his way, but he was desensitized by this point. "That was a catch even I could have missed. Good job." The closest to praise his pride could handle.
Jack Abbot didn't hand out praise either. Very rarely, and only subtly. But yet, here he was. Encapsulated by the newest night doctor.
