Kira Yamato is a kind, compassionate, and selfless man who was willing to put his own life at risk to protect others without hesitation, especially his friends and loved ones. A strong believer in individualism, Kira firmly believed in the freedom of choice for all people and had a profound respect for life. Kira is an introvert by nature and spent long periods alone contemplating his thoughts and emotions but also enjoyed being with and talking to others. Kira can be stubborn and had the habit of entering into dangerous situations without thinking them through. Not wanting to kill people, he aims to disable Mobile Suits instead of shooting the cockpit, something he is very capable of doing. Lacus Clyne appears to be naive and a bit of an airhead at first glance, but it is only due to her idealistic and pacifistic nature. Beneath the surface as a pop star and a PLANT idol, she is actually a very deep and philosophical person, as she demonstrates when she delivers speeches throughout the war, mainly about the widening rift between Naturals and Coordinators, the ironies of calling for peace yet doing so with weapons in hand, and the real causes of war as being within the human heart itself. As the leader of the Three Ships Alliance, Lacus is very charismatic, strong-willed, and determined to see their fight for peace through to the end. Like her father, Siegel Clyne, Lacus wishes to see a world where Naturals and Coordinators willingly work together and coexist in harmony, disregarding the notion that Coordinators are an evolved species. Being a pacifist, Lacus holds a strong dislike for war, expressing that they are simply started and repeated through a never ending cycle of attack and retaliation. Lacus Clyne is in love with Kira but worries for him wearing himself down and the effects war has had on him. Lacus is a Coordinator with long flowing pink hair and pale cerulean eyes, and she tends to wear white dresses. Despite wanting peace, Lacus can and will fight, commanding the Eternal. Asagi Cadwell is the De facto leader of the Astray Trio. It is because of Asagi's natural leadership that she and the other inexperienced test pilots of the M1 Astray Team managed to become a formidable fighting team when they were plunged into real combat for the first time. Asagi is loyal to Orb and likes to tease Cagalli over Athrun, just like the rest of the Astray Team. Asagi is a blond haired blue eyed girl that wears a green tank top under her red vest with blue jeans. For the beach, Asagi is wearing a black and green bikini swimsuit.

Mayura Labatt is noted for having a tomboyish demeanor. As a test pilot for the M1 Astray, she fought bravely alongside her teammates, Asagi Caldwell and Juri Wu Nien, to defend her home nation from the Earth Alliance. Along with her fellow pilots, she had a playful side. The three Astray pilots tease their commander, Cagalli Yula Athha, about her relationship with Athrun Zala. Mayura is a young woman with short dark red hair and indigo eyes that wears a pink t-shirt under her red vest with blue jeans. For the beach, Mayura is wearing a red and black bikini swimsuit.

Juri Wu Nien possesses strong skills in teamwork, which makes up for her lack of combat experience. Juri possesses a high level of intelligence and adaptability. Under the alias "Marlin," she was able to infiltrate the Junk Guild to study the Astray Red Frame, a task she completed successfully. Juri is loyal to Orb and likes to tease Cagalli over Athrun, just like the rest of the Astray Team. Juri can be identified by her trademark glasses, which she wears even in her pilot suit. Juri is a young woman with shoulder length blue hair and amber eyes that wears a yellow shirt under her red vest with blue jeans. Due to her poor eyesight, she wears a pair of thick pink glasses. Cagalli Yula Athha, although raised as a princess in Orb and taught to be proper, sophisticated, and elegant; is far from it, for she is quite stubborn, rebellious, masculine, and often free-spirited. Cagalli Yula Athha is also shown to dislike being called a princess and when someone calls her one she instantly tells them not to call her that again. Despite rebelling against both her father and her responsibilities as a princess, she is quite loyal to her country and more than willing to give up her life to save it. In CE 72, Cagalli became the leader of her country in place of her father. However, she is shown to be reluctant in speaking against the pro-Alliance leaders of Orb and had trouble difficulty in handling situations when it involves her country's future. Cagalli is a natural. Cagalli has short blonde hair and amber eyes. Typically, Cagalli wears boyish clothes, but she wears a pink Mobile Suit while piloting. Cagalli pilots the Strike Rouge Ootori. For the beach, Cagalli is wearing a yellow bikini swimsuit.

Athrun Zala is a quiet, reserved, and often a benevolent individual. Athrun is shown to have a firm belief that if soldiers follow their orders then eventually the war will end with success. While good at following orders, Athrun has trouble acting as a team leader due to his compassionate outlook in life. Athrun matured in some respects after the first war. Due to his status as a hero to the PLANT colonies and ZAFT ace pilots, he somehow instinctively portrays a very professional aura and doesn't hesitate when giving orders that can come off as harsh or demanding. After the first war, Athrun Zala joins the Cagalli as her bodyguard, Alex Dino. Athrun Zala wears a green shirt, black jacket, black pants, and black shades as Alex Dino. When Athrun is still working for Orb, he wears an Orb uniform when on duty. Athrun has short navy blue hair and green eyes. For the beach, Athrun is wearing red swimming trunks instead of black pants.

Athrun Zala's perseverance to find himself and discern the truth of the moment amidst the chaos in both wars waged eventually eclipses that flaw. His second flaw is a by-product of his first flaw as his indecisiveness comes off as being labeled as a traitor to either side of the war, much to his frustration and denial. After the first war, Athrun abandoned his position and fame in ZAFT to be close to Cagalli Yula Athha, despite the secrecy that came with it.

The Earth Alliance, often abbreviated to EA, is a military organization that acts as the union of Earth’s militia organizations, known for using mobile suits as an enemy of ZAFT. ZAFT coordinators tend to call them "naturals" because of not being genetically enhanced. The Atlantic Federation is a major part of the Earth Alliance, controlling the Atlantic ocean, North America, and South America.

Blue Cosmos is a group formed by naturals. Seeing Coordinators as unnatural, they want to kill all Coordinators "for the preservation of our pure and blue world". Despite this, Blue Cosmos is responsible for unstable and genetically augmented people known as Human CPU's. Blue Cosmos is in direct control of the Atlantic Federation of the Earth Alliance. After the end of the first war, their army scattered, having lost their leader.

The Three Ships Alliance was a conglomerate alliance of several groups created amidst the chaos during the latter part of the First Alliance-PLANT War, to end the escalating tension between Naturals and Coordinators. As its name suggests, the faction’s primary force is comprised of the three flagships of each group: Archangel, Kusanagi, and Eternal.

ZAFT is a organization formed by Coordinators and exiles from Earth and the EA, who seek refuge in the PLANTs in space as they see Earth and humans as its enemies. Blue Cosmos, and by extension a large part of the Atlantic Federation, call them "unnatural" and "tainted".

The Orb Union is a group of islands to the east of New Guinea that officially maintains a position of neutral idealism, though its industry and political leanings often align it with the Earth Alliance, particularly through its advanced munitions company, Morgenröte, and its secret development of mobile suits. The official name of the mainland is Yalafath, where the Orb capital, Olofat, is located. In addition, there are four cities aside from the capital. Despite most of its commanders wanting to align with the Earth Alliance due to most of the neutral leaning commanders dying in the first war, there are members of Orb who still believe in a neutral Orb.

Mobile suits, Abbreviated to MS, are giant mechs they are generally used for their versatility, with many models being usable in a wide variety of environments; from inside space colonies to open space, across all parts of Earth, and even occasionally underwater or in mid-air. They are often used for combat purposes.
