Her sharp violet eyes scanned the fortified city that stretched out beneath her, searching the dimly lit snow-covered roads for any sign of movement.
A flicker of movement caught her eye. A lone rider emerged from between the houses, his silhouette growing larger with each passing moment. After six months of waiting, her infuriating, battle-hardened husband, the Grand Duke of the North, was finally home.
He dismounted from his horse, his dark form swallowed by the night. As he drew closer, Ahelissa noted the way he moved, a predator returning to its lair. A sardonic curl touched her lips. Perfect. No sign of fatigue, no hint of vulnerability. Just the usual Grand Duke of the North.
"Took you long enough," she said, her voice laced with disdain, even as her pulse quickened. She couldn't help but notice the way his gaze lingered on her for a beat too long before he schooled his features into an impassive mask. "The South must be a terrible place if it takes six long months to settle a petty war."
Ahelissa bristled as he brushed past her, heading across the courtyard towards Kluvine's keep. Even after four years of marriage, he still managed to infuriate her with his stoicism. She stalked after him, her voice echoing in the cold night air.
