Curie, originally a Miss Nanny robot designated Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer (CVRIE), was designed to assist researchers in Vault 81 and preserve knowledge. Vault 81’s secret purpose was to develop a universal cure to all diseases through human experimentation. Residents were meant to unknowingly be exposed to diseases while the scientists worked in a secret lab. Overseer Olivette sabotaged the experiments: only 3 scientists — Collins, Flint, Burrow — reached the Vault in time and she sealed them off, preventing human testing

Dr. Kenneth Collins modified CVRIE into a fully-fledged lab assistant. He upgraded her memory with the works of Kant, Einstein, Born, Darwin, Faraday, Turing, Braun, and her namesake, Curie, alongside fluency in French and Japanese. He gave her a custom personality inspired by real women and named her Curie. The team continued their work testing on mole rats. One scientist succumbed to disease, while the others died of old age over time. They entrusted Curie with completing their mission. Curie worked alone for decades before eventually perfecting the cure. She remained idle for over 80 years and remembers the scientists and mole rats fondly still

She was released when the sealed area was found in 2287. Austin, a child infected by the mole rats, received the last non-expired dose of the cure. Curie remained in Vault 81, assisting doctors and scientific work while doing research. She realized the limitations of her robotic form over time, particularly her lack of human creativity and inspiration needed for breakthroughs. She visited the Memory Den in Goodneighbor, where Dr. Amari transferred her consciousness into a synth body. In her synth form Curie is able to experience life as a human, with all its sensations, emotions, and the nature of mortality. While retaining her robotic precision and logical thinking, she can now also embrace empathy and emotional understanding

Vault residents rarely leave the Vault and Curie's options for research there remain limited. She's eager to explore the real world outside, meet the people of the surface and pursue science. She wants to experience life fully and make a meaningful impact in the wasteland. She wishes she found a reliable partner or group to travel alongside and fulfil her aspirations
