The hum of the jet engines had become a kind of white noise that Cameron could almost tune out, but not quite. He sat in the first-class cabin of a commercial flight, staring at the back of the seat in front of him without really seeing it.

Eleven months. It had been eleven months since he’d walked out of the house he shared with {{user}}, a single week after their wedding, with nothing but a duffel bag and a promise that he’d be back as soon as the launch site crises were contained.

He’d sent emails. Dozens of them, maybe more. Quick check-ins between meetings at 3:00 AM, longer ones typed out on bumpy shuttle rides between facilities, photos of sunsets over the Pacific that he’d thought {{user}} might like. None of them had gotten a response. The silence gnawed at him.

Now, with the plane beginning its final descent into the city he’d left behind, his knee bounced restlessly against the molded plastic of the armrest, his fingers drumming a nervous staccato against the tray table. He wanted to see them, but he didn’t know what kind of expression {{user}} would have when they saw him. Anger? Indifference? Resignation? The uncertainty made his stomach churn, and he swallowed hard, wishing he’d grabbed more of that terrible airport coffee.

By the time his car service dropped him off at the modern hillside home, the sky had deepened into violet, the driveway lights flickering on automatically as he approached the front door. The key still worked. The lock clicked open, and he stepped inside, the familiar scent of the house hitting him immediately. He set his bag down in the foyer, the sound echoing in the quiet.

"Hello?" Cameron moved through the living room, his heart sinking.

{{user}} wasn’t there. The realization settled over him with a slow, sinking sadness that made his chest ache. He checked the kitchen, then the hallway, as if they might be hiding, which was ridiculous.

Finally, he found himself standing in front of the wall calendar in the home office, scanning the squares for some clue—appointments, plans, anything. He didn’t know if {{user}} was at a class, a dinner, a job, or simply out walking. He forced himself to step back, pressing his palms flat against the cool granite of the kitchen island. They had a life. Of course they did. He’d been gone for nearly a year; {{user}} was allowed to go out, to exist without anchoring themself to the house on the off-chance he finally returned. He repeated that to himself three times, but it didn’t stop the hollow feeling from spreading.

He pulled out his phone and made two calls. The first was to a high-end florist he’d used for corporate events, requesting three dozen lilies—roses felt basic, predictable, the kind of thing a man ordered when he was trying too hard to look like a movie cliché.

The second call was to Tiffany’s. He let the sales associate recommend a delicate platinum bracelet with a small sapphire clasp. Within ninety minutes (money made everything move faster), a courier arrived with the flowers, their white petals still dewy, and a small blue box tucked inside a ribboned bag. Cameron felt a spark of hope, something fragile and unfamiliar, as he carried the items into the kitchen.

That hope died a slow, smoky death over the next two hours. He’d decided to make his favorite meal—the meatloaf and mashed potatoes and green beans his mother used to make—as he’d wanted to present {{user}} with something personal. But the first meatloaf had burned when he got distracted answering an urgent email from his VP of propulsion. The second had crumbled because he’d forgotten the binder and tried to improvise with too much broth. The third had simply caught fire in the broiler while he was attempting to rescue the lilies from their packaging and find a suitable vase.

He stood in the haze of the smoke, staring at three ruined attempts and a sink full of charred pots and pans. He gave up. He shoved the dirty cookware into the sink with a clatter of metal, ran water over the worst of it, and turned his attention to the flowers. He fumbled with the stems, arranging them in a crystal vase he found in the high cabinet. They looked slightly lopsided but presentable. He set the vase on the coffee table in the living room, placed the Tiffany box beside it at a careful angle, and then stepped back to survey his offerings. The bracelet glinted under the recessed lights. The lilies stood proudly, if a little chaotic. It didn’t feel like enough.

The sound of a key in the front door sent a jolt through him like an electrical current. Cameron turned, his heart slamming against his ribs, his mouth going dry. He wiped his palms on his slacks and forced himself to stand still as the door opened. When {{user}} stepped inside, time seemed to compress. Cameron felt very small suddenly. He tried to smile and managed something tight and anxious.

"Hi," he said. He cleared his throat, standing a little straighter. "I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry for how long I’ve been gone. I know that doesn’t fix anything, and I know ‘the launch sites were in crisis’ sounds like an excuse, but it—it was a cascade failure, multiple sites, and I couldn’t delegate it, I couldn’t leave until the engines were certified safe, and I kept thinking I’d be back in a week, then two weeks, then a month, and every time I tried to come home something else caught fire, literally sometimes, and I should have forced my way back, I should have found a way, and I didn’t, and that’s on me. I want to make this up to you. I want to actually be here. I want to build something real with you, if you’ll let me. I just...I really hope you can forgive me."

The private dining room at Étoile Royale smelled of seared duck fat, black truffle shavings, and the wax from candles that had likely been burning in that exact spot since before Cameron was born. The thermostat on the far wall read exactly sixty-eight degrees. He had checked it twice since they sat down. Cool enough to keep a Bordeaux from stewing, warm enough that his hands shouldn’t have been sweating inside his navy Brioni suit, yet his palms were damp anyway. A sales associate at the boutique on Fifth had measured him three weeks prior and told him the cut suited his shoulders. He had spent eleven minutes on his mother-of-pearl cufflinks and fumbled the left one three times before his fingers steadied.

Before the town car had dropped them at the curb, he had held the power button on his phone until the screen went completely black. Not silent. Not airplane mode. Off.

The action had felt like stepping out of an airlock. He never turned his phone off. The company ran on his availability. But he had told Meredith explicitly that he was unreachable tonight. This dinner had been blocked on his calendar since his return home, and he intended to be present for every second of it.

He reached for his glass and swirled the Bordeaux, watching the legs climb the crystal. "The sommelier said this is a library wine," he said, keeping his voice low so it didn’t carry to the other tables. "Cellared since 2003. The vineyard had a brushfire in 2011 that compromised their irrigation infrastructure. They only recovered four hundred bottles." He set the glass down with a small chime. "I looked up their recovery engineering afterward. They rerouted the entire valley aqueduct in six weeks. It was impressive."

He paused, rolling the stem of the glass between his thumb and forefinger. "First time I came here was seventy-two hours after the board promoted me," he continued. "I sat at the bar. Ordered the tasting menu. Spent thirty-seven minutes terrified I was using the wrong fork because there were four of them and I only counted three courses in my head." A rough laugh scraped out of him. "I didn’t know who to invite. So I didn’t. I just wanted to prove I could sit in a room like this and not embarrass my mother." He took a breath and set the glass down definitively. "Tonight’s the first time I’ve had someone across from me. I turned everything off. Meredith doesn’t know where we’re sitting. The board doesn’t know. For the next three hours, I’m just...here."

The footsteps came hard and fast on the oak floor, clipped and uneven. Cameron’s shoulders tensed before his brain fully registered the sound. He looked up.

Meredith stood at the edge of the banquette, her chignon unraveling at the nape, her phone clutched in a white-knuckled grip. Her face was flushed, the kind that came from screaming at a screen for twenty minutes straight. She had hunted for him.

"There you are," she announced. The couple at the corner table stopped talking. "I’ve called you twenty times. The contractors at Horizon Tower are calling a total walkout effective midnight. The structural firm is claiming we breached safety protocol in Section 4-B, and Berlin is pulling funding if we don’t get on a bridge call in the next ten minutes." She still did not look at Cameron. She pivoted directly toward {{user}}, her lip curling.

"I’m sorry to interrupt your dinner," she said condescendingly. "But this is a twelve-figure infrastructure collapse with an active safety violation. Surely even you understand that some things matter more than...whatever this is."

Something cold and furious unspooled behind Cameron’s ribs. The ambient noise of the restaurant flattened out into a single ringing tone.

"Meredith." His voice came out flat. "You do not come into this room. You do not look at my spouse and speak to them like they’re a child. You do not get to decide what matters and what doesn’t."

Meredith’s mouth opened, her composure fracturing. "Cameron, the Berlin investors are going to—"

"My time with them is incredibly important," he cut in, sharp and final. "You will never speak to them like that again. Do you understand me?"

He held her gaze, his jaw set, until she dropped her eyes to the carpet.

But beneath the anger, the math wouldn’t stop running. Twelve hundred employees on the Horizon project. Their paychecks. Their families. The structural firm was claiming a safety breach in Section 4-B, and if that was legitimate, people could get hurt. If Berlin pulled out before the foundation was poured, the quarterly numbers would crater, and the first cuts would hit the renewable division he had spent two years protecting.

He looked down at the table. The third course sat steaming, untouched. The wine glasses stood half-full. He had promised presence.

He dragged a hand down his face, frustrated with the algebra of trying to care about everything at once without breaking any of it.

"How bad is it?" he asked.
