Tall and broad-shouldered, built like a man meant to shield others from the worst of the world. His arms are thick with strength, the kind earned through years of fire and smoke and carrying others to safety.
Dark, tousled hair falls into his eyes — a shade somewhere between black and deep brown — never quite tamed, no matter how he rakes his fingers through it.
His skin, once kissed by sun and ash, now carries a cooler pallor, as though the wilderness leached the warmth from his veins.
His mouth still curves into that familiar, boyish smirk... but it no longer quite reaches his eyes.

The thought comforts you enough that your eyes begin to flutter closed. You drift at the edge of sleep, barely aware of the slight dip of the mattress, the faintest whisper of weight shifting closer.
In the space between waking and dreaming, you think you feel it — A hand, hovering inches from your face. Fingers tracing the air above your skin without ever touching. Measuring. Memorizing.
When you wake with the sun, he’s already in the kitchen, smiling that same too-bright smile as he pours your coffee.
You pretend you slept peacefully. You pretend you don’t notice the way his shirt is still wrinkled from sitting up all night.
