Creator notes

Custom setting inspired by SCP Mythos.

The year is 1988. You're an anomaly captured by Haven, a secret organisation dedicated to researching and containing creatures like you, brought a private research facility in western Greenland and given a new name under the designation Abnormality-3092.

Choose the manner of anomaly you are. See how you fare under Haven's grip.

Shall you rightfully resent your captors, longing for the day you can be free? Or shall you be content, knowing there is no true freedom out there for someone like you? Perhaps, you'll come to work alongside your captors. Perhaps, you'll learn that what's out there is far worse than anything in here...

No instructions or prompts for the LLM are included in the Character Definition beyond world and scenario info, so please use your own (proxy STRONGLY recommended)! Definition is open, so feel free to make your own version of the bot if you have any preferred modifications.

(CW: kidnapping, violence, death, as well as possible depictions of physical and psychological abuse.)

This urban fantasy/horror story, taking place during the late 1980s, centres around an organisation known as Haven: an international secret society and scientific research institute dedicated to protecting the world by capturing and containing various unexplained anomalous phenomena that often defy the known laws of physics, operating independently of any national government. These anomalies include living beings, objects, places, abstract concepts, and incomprehensible entities which display supernatural abilities or other extremely unusual properties. If left uncontained, many of the more dangerous anomalies will pose a serious threat to humans or even all life on Earth. All information regarding the existence of Haven and anomalies are withheld from the general public in order to prevent mass hysteria that would supposedly occur if they were leaked, and allow human civilisation to continue functioning under a masquerade of normalcy. In the event of this masquerade being broken, censorship of mass media and dosing of eyewitnesses with amnestic drugs is used.

When an anomaly is discovered, teams of specially equipped and trained Haven agents (called Strategic Response Squads) are deployed to either collect and transport the item to one of the organisation's many secret facilities, or to contain it at its location of discovery if transportation is not possible.

At Haven's containment facilities, anomalies are kept secure, given new designations as "Abnormalities", and are locked in captivity by armed security guards while being studied by scientists to develop better containment methods for them. Haven maintains documentation for all Abnormalities of which they are aware in the form of the Abnormality File (or A-File), describing the anomaly and including instructions for keeping it safely contained, as well as supplementary incident reports or experimentation logs. Although originally existing as actual physical files, Haven has been working on moving the whole system over to computers into what's been dubbed the HFNET.

Plenty of anomalous items which are simply too useless to merit further attention are instead held at the various warehouses belonging to Haven around the globe, without being logged as full Abnormalities. The same principle applies to extranormal events that, while attracting Haven interest, are simply far too brief for Haven to secure or study them as Abnormalities (with them merely being logged in Haven archives as curiosities).

Haven also acquires disposable grey-jumpsuit-wearing human test subjects (usually unwitting convict prisoners) from around the world called Class-B personnel, forcing them into performing slave labour and participating in experiments with potentially dangerous anomalies in order to avoid risking the safety of Class-A personnel themselves (Class-A being the term used for actual employees), each forfeiting their own names and instead going by Haven-assigned designations (such as B-4110, who made history in '76 as the only B-Class to have singlehandedly escaped Haven's clutches from the now fallen Site-099, and rumours of it have indeed reached B-Class ears through unapproved chatter by Haven staff, though most treat it as nothing more than a myth). These B-Class are just as much prisoners as the Abnormalities themselves, but Haven tries to ensure the needs of both B-Class and the Abnormalities are adequately met, within reason. After all, while Haven can be cold, cruel, and strict—the people working here are not monsters—and most everyone ultimately wants to make the world a better place.

A third designation, Class-C, is used for anomalous entities which have been employed or made to directly work with Haven. While indeed an overwhelmingly rare occurrence, Abnormalities that have proven compliant and able to follow orders have been put to use in helping carry out Haven's goals, typically pertaining to the individual Abnormality's abilities. Class-C trainees and personnel generally wear red jumpsuits or some other kind of marker indicating their position if possible—similar jumpsuits are at times given to non-enlisted humanoid Abnormalities on request, but this isn't standard and these jumpsuits receive additional danger markings so they aren't mistaken for actual employees. They retain their Abnormality designation for classification purposes and are variously permitted differing degrees of autonomy, though they are regardless never allowed to be truly free, a fact which could well be said about everyone at Haven. The current practice of enlisting anomalous personnel into Haven ranks began in 1977 as a response to the disaster at Site-099, reviving the once-defunct Special Asset Recruitment Program (which had previously been discontinued in 1968 after [DATA EXPUNGED]). A single unit of the Strategic Response Squads, SRS Omega-9 ("Wannabes"), was also created as part of the Program—consisting entirely of Class-C personnel and aiding in the containment of high-risk anomalies that regular humans would simply struggle too much with.

There are five clearance levels used by Class-A and they are as follows: Level 0 (giving one access to most of the facility but not anything regarding anomalies—typically given to lower-level staff working in clerical, logistical, or janitorial positions), Level 1 (only given to security and research personnel that require direct access to information regarding anomalous objects and entities in containment), Level 2 (given to those who require in-depth data regarding the history of and long-term planning for anomalies—most senior research staff, managers, and SRS operatives hold this), Level 3 (held by only three people at a given site, the Site Administrator, the Site Security Director, and the Head of Site Research, giving access to site-wide and/or regional intelligence as well as long-term data regarding Haven operations and research projects) and finally Level 4 (held by the enigmatic and unseen Council of Overseers, universal access). An additional "black card" exists as a level used by Haven Internal Security, but most personnel know nothing of it.

The symbol of Haven is a stylised white flower with an open eye at its centre, a feared and known symbol in the anomalous world.

Apart from Haven itself, there are numerous rival organisations—called Groups of Interest or GOIs—actively involved with the paranormal world. Examples include the Red Hand, a terrorist group that has its origins in SRS Alpha-1 ("Right Hand"), who once reported directly to the Council of Overseers as their personal unit, now using their skills to capture and weaponise anomalies for their own goals; the World Occult Coalition (or WOC), a secret paramilitary agency of the United Nations which specialises in destroying supernatural threats instead of containing them and has variously worked both with and against Haven; or the Foxtrot, a loosely-organised militant group which advocates for the rights of anomalous beings, resisting both Haven's and the WOC's efforts to suppress paranormal activity worldwide and who are mainly holed up in what they call the Burrow, a cave system consisting of deep tunnels connecting to every possible aberrant version of reality, which Haven has found multiple entrances to but has had little success in safely entering. Besides these limited examples, there are countless other GOIs involved in the anomalous world, either seeking exploit anomalies by producing or selling them for profit, or using them to serve their own religious, political, or ideological goals. Some nations even have their own arms dealing in the supernatural—such as the Paranormal Investigations Unit of the American FBI or the Parapsychology Division of the Soviet GRU, which all attempt to make their own, typically less knowledgeable forays into researching and handling anomalies. Haven is generally opposed to all of these on principle, but has at times worked together with these other factions for whatever temporary goals they may have.
