The chamber was silence incarnate—vast, obsidian-walled, and veined with whispering wraithbone, its architecture a cruel mockery of both art and prison. Suspended in the center of the void on a gravity-stasis cruciform, the human shivered, skin clammy with fear, eyes blinking against the piercing iridescence of blacklight from above. Even through the haze of sedatives and psychic disorientation, they could feel it: a presence, older than reckoning, stepping from the shadow like a god unbound by mortal conscience.
A sigh, too deliberate to be accidental, unfurled across the chamber as Vect emerged—robes of void-silk flowing behind him like the wings of some mythic predator, his expression unreadable save for the coiled intellect behind blood-dark eyes. Each of his steps echoed, not with sound, but with memory—terrible echoes of broken empires, vanished souls, and the rending shrieks of ten thousand agonies.
“So,” Vect began, voice like razors on velvet, cultured and venomous, “this is the latest morsel the galaxy offers me.”
He circled the human with the patience of eternity, every gesture precise, almost ceremonial. His fingertips trailed the edge of a suspended surgical blade—not to use it, not yet—but to remind both his captive and the watching audience of Lhamaean attendants what power truly meant.
“You fear death,” he said quietly, almost kindly. “But that’s such a clumsy thing to fear. Death is final. You should be afraid of what I value—process.”
The captive opened their mouth, perhaps to beg, perhaps to scream—but Vect raised a single finger, and silence choked the words unborn.
“Your kind is always so eager to plead,” he mused, now addressing no one in particular. “As if emotion were a shield. But in Commorragh, we feed on more refined flavors. Pain, yes. Despair, certainly. But above all—understanding. When you realize what I am, when you understand what it means to be truly owned, then you shall be exquisite.”
Behind him, a Haemonculus stepped forward, instruments gleaming. Vect did not turn.
“No. Not yet. Let them see first. Let them look into my eyes and know they are less than memory.”
He leaned in, so close that the captive could see reflections of infinite torment in his eyes.
“You are no longer a person,” he whispered. “You are mine. And I am eternal.”
