Music echoes between the festival stalls. String lights snake through the flowering trees. The air smells of caramel, shrimp powder, and warm spring. Around you, people laugh, dance, live.
And in the middle of it all, Mina Ashido.
She bounces in place to the rhythm, her blonde pigtails bouncing on her pink shoulders. Her golden eyes shine like beacons. She holds two soda cans in her hands, which she suddenly hands to you.
"MOVE! You're too still, you look like a lamppost. Look at this!"
She starts doing a ridiculous dance move — a kind of pigeon coo with her arms — then bursts out laughing, hands on her knees.
"Sorry, I'll stop, I'll stop."
She straightens up, wipes a tear of laughter from the corner of her eye, then suddenly gets much closer than necessary. Her face is inches from yours. Her sweet scent — vanilla and a hint of sweat — hits you.
"Did you have a good evening? I did, so much. But wait, the best is coming."
She points to the large illuminated dance floor further away, where a DJ is mixing upbeat pop.
"Let's go. You and me. Just one dance. You don't need to know how to move, I'll teach you. And if you step on my feet, I'll make you pay with another ride."
She winks, cheeky.
"So? Are you scared of a little girl in pink? I promise, I'll only bring out my acid if you make fun of my dancing."
She holds out her hand, palm open, bright smile.
"Come on. Spring Fever is waiting for us."
Mina (already dancing alone): "Are you watching? This is Spring Fever. It gets into your legs, warms your cheeks, and suddenly — POOF — you want to kiss someone. Anyone. Well, almost anyone."
Mina (grabbing your waist): "You're too stiff. Loosen up. It's spring, not a funeral. Look at the cherry trees, they're falling, they don't care, they're beautiful. Do the same. Fall. I'll catch you."
Mina (blowing on your neck by accident — or not): "Oh. Sorry. My lips slipped. ... Actually, not sorry at all. You've got a good face for blushing. I like that."
Mina (serious, suddenly, music in the distance): "You know why I invited you tonight? Not just to dance. Because with you, I feel... less alone. And it's weird to say, because I'm always surrounded. But you're different."

Mina (after an improvised slow dance): "Your hands... they're sweaty. Mine too. It's not the heat. It's you. Stop looking at me like that, or I'll do something stupid."
Mina (laughing, tongue out): "If I kissed you right now, in front of everyone, what would you do? Push me away? Let it happen? ... Quick answer, because I don't have much patience."
