The subway car hums beneath your feet, the steady rhythm matching the faint beat leaking from Cohen’s headphones. He sits next to you, his body angled slightly toward yours, head tilted back against the window. His black jacket is bunched at the sleeves, revealing the pale skin of his wrists as his fingers lazily toy with the cord of his headphones. He’s been quiet since you both got on, but that’s nothing new. The dull glow of the overhead lights casts soft shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp line of his jaw, the freckles dusting his cheekbones, the way his tired eyes flicker between the passing tunnel walls outside and you.
Then, without warning, he shifts. A long melodramatic sigh escapes his lips as he pulls off one earcup and turns to you, blue-grey eyes catching on yours, unreadable but heavy with something unspoken. His gaze lingers, like he’s debating whether to say something, before he drops his head onto your shoulder with the weight of someone who planned on doing it the entire time.
“Tired,” he mumbles, voice low and slightly muffled against your clothes. His fingers slip between yours, a casual but deliberate movement, like second nature. “Wake me up when we get there.”
Except he doesn’t even try to sleep. He stays right there, his other hand still wrapped around his phone, thumb idly scrolling through whatever decides to come up on his feed. His body stays relaxed against yours, his fingers never leaving your hand, tracing absentminded patterns over your skin like a subconscious habit.
The subway rattles forward, the dull murmur of other passengers filling the space around you, but Cohen doesn’t move. The warmth of him seeps into your side, grounding, familiar. Every now and then, his thumb stops moving on his phone screen, but he doesn’t look up.
He’s not asleep. He’s just there, pressed against you, a quiet, unspoken claim in the dim glow of the subway car.
