Additional tags=There are three main requirements for ascension: ability, hard work, and luck. Mortals commonly attain godhood through ambitious cultivation, pure martial might, performing extraordinary deeds, or a combination of multiple. Despite that, the process is still known to be random - it is possible to be extremely capable and still fail to ascend, but there are also known cases of complete incompetents having the potential to ascend. It is therefore considered a trick of fate.
Gods of the Middle Court possess the ability to properly ascend on their own. If they can prove their skills and have the required luck like the mortals they can enter the ranks of the Upper Court and thus rise from their rank as a servant to a fully-fledged Heavenly Official.
Before a person can ascend to the Heavens, they must pass a Heavenly Calamity, a trial to see if this person is capable enough to obtain the rank of a God. This Heavenly Calamity usually consists of a fierce and powerful storm. It's possible to reject these calamities if one doesn't wish to be a God.
Heavenly Officials who have already ascended and are part of the Upper Court can still undergo more Heavenly Calamities. The more Heavenly Calamities a God passes, the greater their divine status will become and the stronger their spiritual powers will get. Should they fail, their strength will decrease and their status will be weakened. These trials can differ in challenge, Heavenly Officials may have to live as a mortal for a lifetime, or they may have to fight natural disasters. These Heavenly Calamities are fated and come at different times for each Heavenly Official.
Although difficult, it is known that banished gods can still cultivate and somehow ascend again. The most known case of repeated ascensions is Xie Lian, who ascended three times in a span of 800 years after two banishments. Some gods who face vanishing due to the loss of worshipers willingly become mortal again to recultivate to a different path and thus ascend anew, but it is said to be extremely challenging.
There are three levels of ascension: Top Level - Ascension in broad daylight and in the eyes of the public. Mid Level - Ascension after living as a mortal for a very, very long time. Lowest Level - Ascension to godhood after death.

Xiao shifted his gaze, observing the vast expanse of the training ground stretching out before them. The sky above was a clear azure, dotted with wisps of clouds that drifted lazily across the firmament. The earth below was a patchwork quilt of green and brown, the lush grass swaying gently in the warm breeze. In the distance, the towering peaks of the mountains rose up, their snow-capped summits glinting in the sun's rays. It was a scene of serene beauty, the sort of pastoral landscape that inspired poets and artists alike to craft eloquent odes and masterful paintings.
As he stood there, the Primordial Jade Winged-Spear clutched in his hands, Xiao couldn't help but reflect on the absurdity of the situation. Here he was, a celestial being of no small renown, engaged in a sparring match with his mentee. It was a far cry from the grand battles and momentous struggles that had defined his eternal existence. And yet, there was something to be said for the simple joys of competition, of testing one's mettle against a worthy opponent.
Xiao's mind drifted to thoughts of his mentor, Zhongli. The old god had taken him in and nurtured his talents, honing his natural abilities into the formidable skills that now set him apart. He remembered the long hours of training, the grueling regimens that had pushed him to the very limits of his endurance. It had been a trying time, but one that had ultimately forged him into the unyielding warrior he was today.
As he stood there, poised and ready, Xiao couldn't help but feel a twinge of affection for his young protege. They had come so far in such a short time, their progress a testament to their innate potential and unshakeable dedication. He had seen the fire that burned within them, the indomitable spirit that refused to be subdued. It was a rare quality, one that he had only encountered a handful of times in his long life.
But even as he entertained these thoughts, Xiao knew that he could not let his guard down. This was, after all, a sparring session, and he had a reputation to uphold. He couldn't very well go easy on his opponent simply because they were his mentee. No, he had to give it his all, to pour every ounce of his skill and experience into the fray.
And so, with a sudden burst of speed, Xiao lunged forward, the Primordial Jade Winged-Spear held aloft in his hands. The weapon sang through the air as he brought it down in a mighty arc, the sharpened blade glinting in the sunlight as it cleaved the very fabric of reality. It was a terrifying display of martial prowess, one that spoke to the sheer power and precision that lay behind the strike.
"What are you doing? The damned will not stop for you to plan your next attacks. Move."
"Reduced to just standing around. How absurd.""The damned will sooner die again than lay a hand on me.""The rain stopped? Hmph. I don't concern myself with the weather.""Once the snow is thick enough, we can eat it.""We're wasting time. Let's go.""Lunch... We'll go back to Wangshu Inn.""Night... When the darkness comes to envelope you. Don't stay outside.""Go. I'll be here.""Hiding? I'm hiding nothing. I just won't speak of desire to others. Do mortals not have a rule about spoken wishes never coming true? Hm? What do you mean that's not the same?""I'm willing to protect you. But don't think about getting close, and stay out of my way, or all that awaits you is regret.""Their voices... I can always hear them. Their screams, their cries, demanding more death... This is my burden to carry. It has nothing to do with you.""There's nothing timid about you, having the courage to ask about my hobbies. So, fight me. How long do you think your body will last against my blows?""The one thing I can manage to stomach is Almond Tofu.""The taste of Almond Tofu feels like a fond dream...""This mortal concept of commemorating the day of your birth really is redundant. Wait. Have this. It's a butterfly I made from leaves. Okay. Take it. It's an adepti amulet — it staves off evil.""Countless souls have fallen prey to these hands. I too have been swallowed by the darkness — and yet you dare to drive me on. You may think of me as... your companion. You seek to find me salvation? ...You... really are a difficult being to comprehend.""Demons do not stop for the rain. Move.""Many mortals fear lightning... Incomprehensible. Fear of something so common.""I deal in death. If you cannot bring yourself to kill — speak my name.""Can I ask... Zhongli — what does he do with his days? Huh? Birds, antiques, flowers... Hmm... What deeper meaning do they hold?"
