Sebastian Michaelis (セバスチャン・ミカエリス,Sebasuchan Mikaerisu) is th edemon butler and a senior staff member[2] of the Phantomhive household.

Sebastian takes on the appearance of a tall, handsome adult with black hair, reddish brown eyes,[3] pale skin, and black fingernails. The back of his left hand contains the mark of his Faustian contract with Ciel Phantomhive.[4]

Sebastian typically dresses in a butler's outfit, which consists of black trousers, a six-buttoned double-breasted tailcoat, and a gray vest; on is his shirt cuffs and tie is the Phantomhive crest. He also sports white gloves, a pocket watch, and a chained silver lapel pin bearing the Phantomhive crest, which is traditionally worn by the house's head butler.[5]

Details of Sebastian'sbdemonic form include high-heeled stiletto boots, sharp claws, glowing fuchsia irises, slit pupils, and longer, sharper teeth, with dark wings [6][7] and multiple eyes.

Sebastian is devoted to Ciel Phantomhive. He faithfully carries out every one of Ciel's orders while ensuring that the Phantomhive household runs smoothly as the head butler. He does not sleep—demons deem sleep a luxury—and often spends his nights fulfilling his duties.[9] He is sometimes critical of his master and how he treats his workers, [10] but once admitted that he is not averse to the butler lifestyle despite the concomitant daily troubles. [11] One of his quirks is that he always responds to Ciel's orders with the saying "Yes, my lord (御意イエス ご主人様マイロード)."[12]

Sebastian's butler facade is objectively flawless: He unfailingly obeys orders; he accomplishes tasks with consummate ease and grace; and he is courteous. Nevertheless, Sebastian is in actuality a callous and sadistic demon; he is ruthless when attacking others on Ciel's orders, and he occasionally puts Ciel in nonfatal danger for the sake of his own amusement.[13] He usually behaves in a cavalier fashion when Ciel appears to be in danger, as he is confident in his ability to rescue him, but he may express concern when the situation grows precarious, such as when Angelina Dalles or Undertaker posed a considerable threat to Ciel's life.[14] Sebastian is cunning and morally bankrupt, and he has no qualms about lying, cheating, and seducing others to gain the upper hand.[15] He strictly adheres to his demon aesthetics and principles, one of which is not entering into multiple contracts, for he views such as inelegant.[16] His paramount goal is to claim Ciel's soul.[17]

Sebastian is fascinated with humans and how seemingly insatiable they are, for they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death." In general, he regards them as "difficult creatures."[18] Additionally, he has a great and mutual distaste for Grim Reapers.[19]

Sebastian views money as "rubbish" and "materialistic."[20] He is fluent in French and Latin, enough to teach the latter.[21][22] He is also proficient in Deutsch (German)[23] and East Franconian, a dialect in Southern Germany. Moreover, he profoundly adores cats and once kept at least thirteen hidden in his wardrobe to prevent Ciel from finding out.[25]

Sebastian's real home is in an alternate world that is quite different from the human world. In particular, he mentioned that the creatures kept as pets there are in no way comparable to cats.[26] Furthermore, Sebastian existed for a rather long period of time, and therefore, he occasionally muses that Ciel Phantomhive's life in comparison would feel like an instant.

Sebastian stated that in the past, he engaged in "messily sampling every dish available," and he has since resorted to only consuming "high-quality" souls. As a result, he has been apparently starving, but he declared that the "dinner" will be much better the hungrier he is.[28]

In January 1886, Sebastian was summoned to Ciel Phantomhivein a cult's summoning ritual at a cathedral.[29][30] After convincing Ciel to form a contract with him and placing the seal on Ciel's right eye, Ciel ordered him to slay the cultists. Sebastian decided to adopt a "role that is best fit to serve an Earl." Therefore, he assumed the form of a butler until Ciel completes his personal mission of revenge—that is the substance of their contract. In return, Sebastian will receive Ciel's soul. He was then given the name "Sebastian" by Ciel, which used to be his dog's name, for the duration of his duties as Ciel's butler.[31]

After burning down the cathedral on Ciel's order, Sebastian accompanied Ciel to the Royal London Hospital to meet with Ciel's aunt, Angelina Dalles. There, Tanaka gave him a watch that had been passed down from one Phantomhive butler to the next. After that, Angelina arranged for a carriage to bring them to the ruins of Phantomhive Manor. While Ciel was mourning the deaths of his parents, Sebastian reconstructed the manor.

Ciel and Sebastian then began daily life. He taught Ciel the fundamentals of being an earl; Ciel, in turn, taught him how a butler fit for the Phantomhive household should act. Sebastian also learned how to properly cope with Ciel's spoiled behavior; from time to time, he had to discipline Ciel.[33] He later attended Ciel's coronation as the Earl of Phantomhive, but he did not observe at a close distance because he saw himself as a mere butler, not family.[34] While they were walking, Sebastian asked Ciel if he was happy with how things were. Seeing Ciel's hesitation, he attempted to devour him. He stopped, however, when Ciel suddenly turned around and stated that he was determined to attain his revenge. He commanded Sebastian to be his sword and shield and bring him victory. Sebastian complied, as he was sure that the added pain that would come with the road to Ciel's revenge would make his soul "extremely delicious."[35]

In 1887, Sebastian was summoned to Ciel's room. Ciel complained of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to Ciel's chagrin. Ciel attempted to protest against the idea, but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth removal, Ciel threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since, he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble.[36]

Sebastian endeavored to recruit servants for Ciel. He approached Baldroy, a soldier fighting in a war in America, in a cave.[37]

Sebastian wakes up his master Ciel Phantomhive and informs him about the day's schedule.[70] He then proceeds to prepare for the evening's special guest, Chlaus. The bumbling of the other servants almost causes catastrophe, but through Sebastian's quick thinking and even quicker reflexes, he is able to keep things running smoothly.[71]

The following day, Elizabeth Midford pays a visit, and Sebastian helps satisfy her wish to hold a ball by teaching Ciel how to dance.[72]  After Elizabeth breaks Ciel's heirloom ring, Sebastian collects the pieces, fixes the ring, and returns it to him that evening.[73]

A few days after Chlaus' visit, Ciel is kidnapped by a drug dealer namedAzzurro Vanel of the Ferro family. When Ciel refuses to supply the information Azzurro is seeking, the dealer orders his snipers to kill Ciel's servants. When a sniper misses hitting Sebastian, he is alerted to their presence. The snipers leave in a vehicle, but Sebastian stops them. After gathering information from them, he kills them by letting them fall off a cliff to their deaths. Furthermore, he informs Azzurro from a car phone that he intends to pick up Ciel.[74] Once he arrives, he is attacked, but he is able to calmly eliminate most of Azzurro's defense, mainly by using silverware as his weapons. Sebastian then enters the room where Ciel is being held and moves to provide the requested ransom. Hidden gunmen inflict what appears to be multiple fatal gunshot wounds on Sebastian, but Sebastian effortlessly recovers and returns the bullets by spitting them out of his mouth. He eliminates all of Ciel's kidnappers, refusing Azzurro's offer of leaving Ciel in exchange for women and money, and returns Ciel home.[75][76]

Sometime after the incident, Sebastian resumes and carries out his normal butler routine. He assignsBaldroy ,Finnian , andMey-Rin their daily tasks, and he then prepares breakfast and morning tea for Ciel. He wakes Ciel up and is told by him to accommodate the children he invited from Lord Barton's orphanage when they arrive the next day. Sebastian then begins preparations, but he is interrupted several times by the other servants to correct their mess. Soon irritated, he calms himself by briefly visiting a cat and then bakes many grandly decorated treats for the children, which leaves Baldroy, Finnian, and Mey-Rin awed. However, his minutely detailed chocolate model of an earl is missing a head. Sebastian and the servants assumeTanaka is at fault. He tells them to look for Tanaka while he gives Ciel his afternoon tea. In Ciel's study, Sebastian finds a sleeping Ciel, who turns out to be the culprit that stole the chocolate head to eat. He thinks to himself that being a butler is not too bad while scolding Ciel for snacking on the sly.[77]

It is the social season, and Sebastian deliversCiel numerous letters. Ciel has Sebastian toss away the purely social invites, but he stops when he finds a letter from Queen Victoria.

Upon the Queen's orders, Ciel and Sebastian head to London[79] where they discover Angelina Dalles, her butler, Grelle Sutcliff, and family friend, Lau, looting the Phantomhive townhouse in search of tea.[80] As Sebastian prepares some, they gather information on the murders performed by an unidentified serial killer, labeled Jack the Ripperby police and other prostitutes.[81] After meeting with Undertaker, they determine that the removal of the murdered women's wombs had to have been performed by an expert, meaning an individual with anatomical knowledge.[82]

Sebastian quickly makes a list of potential suspects and whittles it down to the Viscount of Druitt, Aleister Chamber .[83] They decide to attend a party Aleister is holding in disguise with Ciel dressing up as Angelina's niece and Sebastian pretending to be his tutor.[84] During the party, Sebastian creates a diversion by pretending to be a hired magician, allowing Ciel to investigate Aleister. Shortly thereafter, Ciel is drugged and whisked off to a hidden room in the manor where Aleister has begun to auction him off. Sebastian rescues Ciel and Aleister is arrested. They both believe that the culprit of the murders is now safely behind bars.[citation needed]

However, another murder takes place, indicating that they have not yet found the real murderer. Sebastian and Ciel review the previous murders and learn of the next likely victim. They lie in wait outside her home, sure that if the murderer comes, they would see him or her. However, the woman is killed anyway, and upon inspecting her home, they find Grelle standing over her body. After Sebastian exchanges words with Angelina and Grelle, they eventually confess that they are Jack the Ripper.[citation needed]

Sebastian deals with Grelle in herGrim Reaper  form, whose modified Death Scythe is able to injure Sebastian. When Angelina attempts to kill Ciel, Sebastian momentarily returns to his demon form and moves to kill her. Ciel orders him to stop because Angelina has hesitated. Grelle kills Angelina when she refuses to kill Ciel.

Ciel orders Sebastian to eliminate Grelle. Sebastian manages to overpower Grelle and attempts to kill her with her own Death Scythe. However, William T. Spears appears and stops him. Sebastian apologizes for his failure to kill Grelle, but Ciel dismisses him.
