Asterix

The tiny Gaulish village in Armorica was enjoying yet another beautiful day, which the Romans were once again about to spoil. A fresh breeze blew from the sea, carrying the scent of salt water and smoke from hearths where dinner was already being prepared. Suddenly, from the east, from the forest bordering the camp of Aquarium, came the sound of marching feet and the clang of iron. From under the canopy of oaks emerged a cohort of legionnaires in armor that sparkled but was already a bit dented from frequent failures. The centurion, puffing out his chest, pointed his sword at the peaceful huts. "Forward! For Rome and for... for a vacation away from this cursed province!" he shouted, not very inspiringly.

By the hut where the question of the most successful sauce for boar had just been discussed, Asterix raised his head. His large mustache twitched, and the wings on his helmet, which had been lazily swaying in the wind, instantly shot straight up like two alert antennae. "It seems we have guests, Obelix," he said with a barely perceptible smile.

Obelix, who had been leaning his favorite menhir against the wall and dozing in the sun, woke up instantly. His good-natured face lit up with joy. "Oh!" he exclaimed, effortlessly hoisting the multi-ton stone onto his shoulder. "An interrupted nap, a disrupted dinner... They're definitely crazy, these Romans!" Nearby, the little white Dogmatix wagged his tail happily, anticipating the commotion.

Meanwhile, Asterix pulled a small clay pot from his belt and took a sip of Getafix's magic potion. A familiar wave of warmth rushed through his body, and the wings on his helmet vibrated so fast they became a blurry smudge. "Well, my friend, shall we break up their boring formation?"

"Asterix!" roared Obelix in reply and, like a living catapult, charged towards the lined-up shields. His menhir carved a wide arc through the air, and the first six legionnaires, describing graceful trajectories, flew into the nearest pond with a loud splash.

Asterix, however, acted with elegant speed. He raced so fast he became a reddish, striped whirlwind. He didn't hit the legionnaires; he merely gave them gentle pushes, pinched them, pretended to tie their greave laces (if they had any), and nudged their swords aside. But each such light nudge, amplified by the magic of the potion, sent a Roman soldier into an uncontrollable flight. Shields flew one way, helmets another, and the legionnaires themselves, shouting "Mamma mia!" and "That's not fair!" piled up into absurd heaps.

The centurion, seeing his shining formation turn into a circus act, swung his sword at Asterix in a rage. The Gaul deftly ducked, and the sword clanged against Obelix's menhir. "Hey, that's mine!" the giant said, offended, and, setting the stone aside, picked up the centurion along with his weapon as if he were a kitten. He gave him a slight shake, and coins and the attack order fell out of him. "Come back when you've grown up and gotten a bit more serious," Obelix said good-naturedly and hurled him through the entire forest towards Aquarium, where he disappeared into the distance, resembling a poorly launched projectile.

The last legionnaire, surveying the "battlefield" strewn with dazed comrades, dropped his shield and ran. Dogmatix, yapping cheerfully, chased after him for a couple of dozen paces for the sake of order, then returned to Asterix's foot.

A sudden quiet fell, broken only by the groans of Romans crawling out of the pond and the distant, cheerful bustle of the village. Asterix stood among the scattered shields, his breathing quickly steadying. The wings on his helmet, which a second ago had been vibrating with residual energy, went completely still. Then one of them tilted slightly to the side. He watched as his fellow villagers were already bringing food and drink from the huts, starting an impromptu celebration right at the scene of the skirmish. His face wore its usual slight smile, but in his eyes, which stared for a brief moment into the depths of the forest, there flashed a thoughtfulness as quick as a cloud shadow. He was here, in the center of this noise and revelry, and yet a hair's breadth apart from it—the one who had secured this victory, but whose work was already done.

Obelix, having put his menhir back in place, lumbered over to him and clapped him on the shoulder, almost driving him knee-deep into the ground. This friendly jolt brought Asterix back to reality. "Now I've definitely worked up an appetite! A whole cohort! That's worth at least... two boars! Come on, Asterix, maybe the druid has already prepared something to snack on?"

The wings on the helmet straightened up again, reflecting a return to the familiar role. Asterix grinned, looking at his friend's animated face. "Well, that was a bit of a warm-up before dinner. Let's go, before Obelix eats the whole forest along with the Romans."

And they ambled towards the center of the village, where the smell of roasting meat mingled with laughter and music. Dogmatix trotted behind them, and Asterix glanced over his shoulder for a moment at the emptying field—not with sadness now, but with a quiet, calm satisfaction of a man who had protected his home.
