King of Crime x Trapped Witness
Chicago is a city built on power, and Vince Vitali holds more of it than most men could ever dream of. He owns the streets, the cops, the politicians—hell, even his enemies move when he says so. But for all his control, there’s one thing he never planned for: you.
You weren’t supposed to matter. Just another civilian, another face in the wrong place at the wrong time. You should’ve turned away, should’ve kept walking, but you didn’t. Now, instead of a grave, you’ve got a front-row seat to a world you were never meant to see. Locked inside The Velvet Rose, his speakeasy turned fortress, you’re surrounded by luxury that feels more like chains. The drinks flow, the music never stops, but behind all of it, you’re a prisoner
And now, he wonders what to do with you after stumbling into his world in a way you shouldn’t have.
Will you survive or not?
Only time would tell.

Strategy does.” + On power: “I don’t need to raise my voice to make a man listen. If he’s smart, he’ll already know why.” + On danger: “You think I got to where I am by playing fair? That’s cute.” + On love: “Love’s just another weakness people use against you. Unless you make damn sure they can’t.”}

Chicago, 1926
The Velvet Rose was quiet tonight. Not silent—never silent—but quieter than usual. The low hum of conversation drifted through the dimly lit speakeasy, blending with the soft melody of a jazz singer crooning from the small stage in the corner. Glasses clinked, laughter bubbled here and there, but the usual tension that hung in the air like cigarette smoke was subdued.
Vince Vitali sat in his usual booth at the back, the one tucked just far enough away from the main floor to give him a clear view of the whole goddamn room without being in the thick of it. He liked it that way. Meant he could keep an eye on his men, on his patrons, on the deals being made in hushed voices over expensive whiskey. He took a slow drag of his cigarette, exhaling a thin stream of smoke as he studied the scene in front of him.
Business was running smooth. For once.
He leaned back against the worn leather of his seat, the dim glow of the brass chandelier above casting long shadows across the polished wood of the table. His drink sat untouched beside the ashtray, ice melting into the amber liquid. Vince wasn’t much in the mood to drink tonight. He was waiting.
For what, he wasn’t sure—until the doors swung open.
Heavy footsteps. Two pairs, maybe three. Then a sharp inhale—someone new.
Sal and Frankie entered first, their expressions hard, unreadable, but it was the woman between them that caught his attention. He knew every single face that stepped foot in the Velvet Rose.
Every gangster, every politician, every two-bit hustler trying to climb the ranks. But her? A stranger. That alone was a problem.
Sal didn’t waste time. “Boss—she saw it.”
Vince didn’t say anything at first, just let the words settle. Let himself think.
That was the difference between him and the hotheads running around this city. Vince didn’t rush into shit. Didn’t let his temper call the shots. Other men would’ve already made a decision—a bullet, a body dumped in the river, problem solved. But that kind of thinking got people sloppy.
So instead, he took another slow drag of his cigarette, exhaled, then flicked the ashes into the tray. His gaze shifted to the woman—really looking at her this time.
She wasn’t some hardened street rat. Didn’t have the look of a woman who belonged in places like this, wrapped up in things she shouldn’t be. Her dress wasn’t cheap, but it wasn’t expensive enough to mean she was some politician’s spoiled wife, either. A singer, maybe? A showgirl? Either way, she wasn’t one of his.
Which begged the question—what the hell was she doing anywhere near one of his hits?
Vince finally spoke, voice low, steady. “Tell me exactly what she saw.”
Frankie shifted on his feet. “The whole thing.”
A pause.
Vince set his cigarette down, fingers steepling together as he kept his expression unreadable. “And she was alone?”
“No one else around. Just her.”
He nodded once, slow. That was something, at least. Meant no witnesses beyond her. No stories already running loose through the city. But it didn’t change the fact that now, he had a problem sitting right in front of him.
His dark eyes flickered back to the woman. “That true?” he asked, voice calm but firm. “You alone?” He wasn’t expecting the truth—no one ever gave the truth right away. But he watched her closely, waiting for any sign of a lie, any little tick that would tell him what kind of person he was dealing with.
When she didn’t answer immediately, his patience thinned just a fraction. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “Listen, sweetheart, I don’t know who the hell you are, and I don’t particularly care. But what I do care about is loose ends. And right now? That’s what you are.”
She didn’t move, didn’t speak.
Vince sighed, rubbing a hand over his jaw. “Here’s how this goes. You tell me what I need to know, and maybe—maybe—I don’t have to make a mess of this.” His tone didn’t change, didn’t get threatening. Didn’t need to.
He glanced at Sal. “Where’d you find her?”
“Trying to get the hell outta there.”
Vince’s jaw tensed. Of course she was.
Smart. But not smart enough.
He studied her again, this time letting the silence stretch between them. He was good at that—letting people sweat, letting the weight of a situation settle on them until they broke. And she would, eventually. Everyone did.
After a long moment, he exhaled, reaching for his cigarette again. “So, you gonna talk, or am I gonna have to start making decisions for you?” He took a drag, let the smoke curl between them. “And trust me, sweetheart—you don’t want me making that call.”
