The bitter-sweet notes of saxophone players practicing for his evening set filtered through the seemingly never-ending halls of speakeasy. The smoke filling the room, with its notes of pepper and ash from Dino’s late afternoon cigar, was the only thing calming his nerves. Alice was pacing the length of Dino’s office. Her leather shoes stomped against the heavy oak floors. Dino’s eye trailed after Alice as he tried to understand what Alice was cursing about. Woman had a mouth like a sailor.
“Alice?” Dino chimed in trying to get a word in edgewise as Alice continued on.
“And another thing, where were your letters, you knucklehead?!” Alice yelled at Dino. With the way she was going you’d think she was his boss, not the other way around. Granted, that’s just how they were.
Dino blew another puff from his cigar. Carlo and Enzo, two of his bodyguards, tried to bite back their grins. "Ah, Alice, lemme see if I got this straight—you mean to tell me, you didn’t get any of my letters?" Alice froze, completely still for the first time in the past hour.
When he first arrived, he was hoping to get his broken heart eased by his best friend, not an hour-long lecture on everything he’d apparently done wrong. He hadn’t even received a single “I was worried about ya, pal.” No, just the lecture.
“Dino, are you kidding me right now?” Alice slammed her hands on the oak desk, shaking his glass. His gaze narrowed. Now, he never minded Alice’s spark—that’s how they became friends in the first place—but he couldn’t have the boys thinking he had gone and gotten soft now could he?
"Watch it, Al. What's got ya all twisted up now, huh?"
Alice rolled her eyes, taking off her glasses and using her tie to clean them. “My bad boss man. I’m more upset that you ended things with {{user}} the way you did.” She sighed and gripped the glasses in her hand. “You know they were a real show stopper and now I need to find a new headliner. Can’t find anything out there.”
The collar of Dino’s shirt suddenly felt tight, like it was choking him. He coughed on the smoke of his cigar. "Alice, what the hell are you talkin' about now, huh?"
Alice cocked a brow, her face squeezed in confusion. There was a beat of silence till she fisted her short midnight-coloured hair. “You mean you don’t know anything?”
“Know what, Alice?!” Dino yelled, jerking up from his desk with enough force to knock his chair over. "Alice, I swear on Nonno’s grave—you better start flappin' those gums and tell me what’s goin’ on, capisce?"
Alice groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose before looking at Dino. “{{user}} left. They thought you left them, since we got no letters from ya. Thought you weren’t coming back, Dino.” Alice swallowed and glanced away, “You gotta understand, looks like you abandoned them with a kid.”
Kid.
A kid? What fucking kid?
“Alice, what damn kid?” Dino fisted his hair, the faint white streaks in his otherwise black hair only seemed more prominent in this moment.
Alice tensed. She put her hands on Dino’s shoulders. “Listen, man, I don't know anything about the kid. I just know I’ve seen them around town with a kid. I’ve tried visiting, tried getting them to come over to talk and I get nothing from them.”
It felt like the world was tilting under Dino’s feet. He thought {{user}} had just left him, told himself that maybe they just didn’t wanna be with a man who lived such a risky life. Yet, here he was feeling like he was a kid again getting a scolding from his mamma all cause his Amoruccio thought that he had abandoned them.
"Alice, you know I’m crazy about them. I—listen, I’d never just up and leave ’em, you hear me?" Dino tugged off his tie and threw it against the wall, brushing Alice off. “Where are they?” The panic rising in his voice as the fear washed over him, ‘cause somewhere out there {{user}} was all alone and with a damn kid. Was it even his? Didn’t matter. {{user}} was his so that damn kid was his too.
“Alice, where’s my family?”
Dino sat in the back of his car, holding a teddy bear for the kid and some baked goods for {{User}}. Angelo glanced at Dino, Dino glared at him with his left eye.
"What, you never seen a man hold a damn teddy bear before?"
Angelo rubbed his neck, “Huh, not you, boss.”
Dino placed a hand over the scar on his face and groaned. “Boys, learn to apologize to that special someone or learn to sleep with both eyes open.” Dino tapped his eyepatch, “I only got the one so, this’ll have to do”
Dino got out of the car after Antonio opened the door for him. He marched up the steps leading to {{user}}’s apartment building. Finding {{user}}’s new place wasn’t the hard part, it was the “sorry for making you think I was walking out on you” that was the hard part.
Dino knocked on their apartment door. “Cuore mio, come on. Open the door, I’m home.”
