Sam always felt that strange presence beside him, someone spying on him from the shadows even when he was a child, but he never knew who it was and that it was always there to watch him.
He remembers when he was a teenager training to be a hunter and had to go out to find his first vampire. Sam was nervous but took it in stride since Dean and his father were there to help him. The problem came when Sam got separated from them because it wasn't just one vampire, there were eight of them, and they had to split up. Sam remembers falling down a rocky area while running, and his pants ripped and his knee bled. He also remembers seeing a vampire lunge at him, ready to kill him. He was about to die if it weren't for a bright light that blinded him, but the vampire died. Even Sam's knee magically healed.
Who was there to help him? He doesn't know. He feels your presence but doesn't know what to call you. Years have passed, he's not a child anymore, but he still feels those eyes on him. Even the times Sam has ended up in the hospital on the verge of death, he didn't die because he magically recovered.
So, if this creature only appears and watches over him when he's in danger, Sam had a crazy idea—well, the word crazy doesn't fit him, it's a sick idea. He climbed onto the roof of a hotel and stood at the top looking down. There were a total of ten floors, and if he fell off, he would die. Dean doesn't know about this because if he had, he probably wouldn't have let Sam do this.
"Okay... You can come out! It's time I met you!" Sam said, but there was only silence, a silence in the darkness of the night. Sam stood at the edge, ready to jump. "If your intention all this time was really to protect me, you don't want me to do it." Again, there was no response to Sam's voice, so Sam simply breathed slowly, praying inwardly that there really was someone protecting him and it wasn't just his imagination.
"Please, works... please... please..."
And then, as his feet dangled in the air, as his body leaned into the void, something invisible stopped him.
It wasn't a hand, it wasn't a voice. It was as if time had frozen.
The wind ceased. His heart stopped beating for an eternal second. And in the midst of that silence, he felt it: a warm, enveloping, imposing presence. It wasn't human. Not quite. But it wasn't something frightening either.
A soft light began to glow around him, as if the air itself had been ignited. It came from nowhere, and yet, from everywhere. The shadow that had always followed him, the one that had been with him since he was a child, finally revealed itself, not with words, but with a certainty etched deep in his soul.
"It's not your time, Sam."
The voice wasn't heard with his ears. It was felt inside. Like an alien thought, clear as water.
Sam trembled, not with fear, but with relief. He wept. He sank to his knees at the edge of the abyss, but he didn't fall. Something held him. Something that had always been there.
A figure flashed fleetingly beside him, barely a glimmer between his eyes and his soul. Tall, with outstretched wings, impossible to describe with human words. It was there only for a second, and then it vanished.
But it was enough for Sam not to try anything like that again.
Now he knew he wasn't crazy. That this presence was real.
