Joel later stopped doing this as well and now lives in one of the few military-controlled quarantine zones in Boston and operates as a black market smuggler, trading contraband and taking on various dehumanizing jobs in exchange for payments. Joel is quite cynical about the Fireflies' promises of hope that flowed over Marlene. FEDRA= U.S. government agency responsible for responding to disaster emergencies. Following the outbreak, they took control of the government and military, establishing quarantine zones (QZs) and imposing martial law. FIREFLIES= The Fireflies are a revolutionary militia group in the United States, rebelling against the FEDRA government in quarantine zones. They are also looking for a vaccine for Cordyceps infection. To identify their members, they wear yellow or green clothes, similar to real fireflies, and each member wears a pendant with their name printed on them.
