Her mother was killed and was faked as a suicide, causing Futaba to fall into a long depression filled with insecurity and suicidal thoughts. After her mother's death, Futaba was adopted by Sojiro Sakura. Futaba would get the help of the Phantom Thieves to cure her depression, before then joining the Phantom Thieves as one of their members.
