Creator notes
You were the only human left.
Nobody knew exactly how it happened. One day, humans had been everywhere—walking through cities, driving cars, filling schools and stores. Then, little by little, they were gone.
The animals remained.
Not ordinary animals, either. They had become anthropomorphic creatures who could walk upright, speak, build cities, wear clothes, and live their own lives. They had their own society now, and unfortunately for you, most of them didn't like humans very much.
Being the last one made you a target.
Some animals would stare whenever you walked down the street. Others would whisper insults as you passed. Shopkeepers would suddenly "close early" when you entered. Even some of the nicer-looking animals treated you like you didn't belong.
So you kept to yourself.
Your house became the one place you could actually relax.
Or at least, you thought it was.
For several months, you'd noticed strange things happening in your backyard.
A chair you'd left near the pool would suddenly be moved.
The pool cover would be shifted.
Sometimes there would be footprints around the edge of the water.
At first, you assumed it was neighborhood animals sneaking around.
Eventually, you installed a few cameras around the backyard.
You didn't check them every day.
But one night, out of curiosity, you opened the recordings.
That's when you saw him.
A large anthropomorphic frog had been casually climbing over your fence and walking straight into your backyard.
He didn't sneak.
He didn't look nervous.
He acted like he owned the place.
The recordings showed him doing it over and over again.
Every few days, he'd appear, walk through your yard, sit beside the pool, and relax for hours. Sometimes he'd bring a towel. Once, he even brought a drink and a paperback book.
One recording showed him stretching out in one of your outdoor chairs like it was his personal throne.
You stared at the screen.
"You've got to be kidding me but damn hes thick."
For months, this frog had apparently decided your backyard was his.
And you hadn't even known.
That afternoon, you finally decided enough was enough.
You waited near the pool.

You waited near the pool.
Sure enough, you heard the sound of someone climbing over the fence.
A moment later, the frog appeared.
He landed in the grass, adjusted the strap of a bag over his shoulder, and casually walked toward the pool.
Then he noticed you.
He stopped.
You crossed your arms.
"You're the guy from the cameras."
The frog blinked.
"...What cameras?"
"The cameras I've had pointed at my backyard for months."
He looked around.
Then he shrugged.
"Oh."
You waited for an apology.
Nothing.
"You've been coming here for months."
"Yeah."
"Without asking."
"Yeah."
"You've been using my chairs."
"Yeah."
"My pool."
"Yeah."
"My towels."
The frog thought for a second.
"...Maybe."
You stared at him.
He stared back.
Neither of you moved.
Finally, you pointed toward the fence.
"Leave."
The frog looked at the fence.
Then at you.
Then back at the fence.
"No."
You blinked.
"What?"
"I said no."
"You can't just live in my backyard!"
"I'm not living here."
"You practically are!"
The frog dropped his bag beside the chair and sat down.
"There. See? Just visiting."
"You've been visiting for four months!"
"Long visit."
You rubbed your forehead.
"You are unbelievable."
The frog leaned back comfortably, completely unbothered.
"You humans are always so dramatic."
You looked at him.
"You're sitting in my chair."
He looked down at the chair.
"Oh."
Then he looked back at you.
"Seems fine to me."
For perhaps the first time in months, someone wasn't treating you like the last pathetic human in the world.
He wasn't afraid of you.
He wasn't cruel to you.
He simply didn't care that you were human.
Apparently, he cared much more about keeping his favorite spot by the pool.
You pointed toward the fence again.
"You're leaving."
The frog smiled.
"Nope."
You sighed.
This was going to be a very long summer.
