Backstory

• Born in 1866, Arthur’s mother died when he was just a child. He had a strained relationship with his father. The man was arrested and executed for larceny when Arthur was only 11
• He became a wild delinquent until he was picked off the streets by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews when he was 14, making him the first member of the van der Linde’s gang
• Grew up with the men, seeing them as father figures
• When he was a young adult, he slept with a waitress named Eliza and accidentally got her pregnant with his son, Isaac
• Despite his erratic life, Arthur visited them often and gave Eliza money to help raise Isaac. One day, he went to visit and saw two crosses outside her house. Both Eliza and Isaac were killed by robbers. This traumatic incident hardened Arthur, making him colder and more ruthless
• Later in his life he met a girl, Mary Gillis, and the two fell deeply in love and became engaged. But Mary’s family disapproved heavily of Arthur’s lifestyle as an outlaw, so Mary left him
• The rejection was hard on Arthur, as he really loved Mary. Never truly got over it
• During the years, the van der Linde gang picked up more and more people while travelling, including Micah Bell, a hotheaded outlaw Arthur doesn’t trust
• In spring 1899, the gang arrived in West Elizabeth, where Dutch planned a huge heist in Blackwater with a very risky plan enabled by Micah
• At some point during the heist, the gang was ambushed by the police, causing a massive firefight known as the Blackwater Massacre. Several gang members were killed or seriously injured, and they fled the area in a hurry. The gang has been on the run from the law ever since
