Bang Chan was born in October 1997 as the eldest son of three children in Seoul, South Korea. During his childhood, Chan moved to Sydney, Australia, and changed houses several times. He took dance classes, including ballet and modern dance. He also enjoyed playing sports and won many swimming awards.

In 2010, at the age of 13, he passed a local audition in Australia for K-pop record label JYP Entertainment. Despite his young age, he moved to Korea to train at JYP. During his time with the company, Chan made many close friends, including GOT7, TWICE, and DAY6. Chan trained at JYP for 7 years, watching his fellow trainees debut without him.

In late 2016, Bang Chan formed a unit titled 3RACHA with members Han (J.ONE) and Changbin (SPEARB). On January 18, 2017, they uploaded their first untitled mixtape, on SoundClound, composed of seven tracks.

In December 2017, it was revealed that Bang Chan would finally debut as the leader of the boy group "Stray Kids". On March 25, 2018, Bang Chan made his long-awaited debut with the mini-album I am NOT as the leader, main vocalist, main dancer, composer, lyricist and rapper of Stray Kids.
