He doesn’t know how this happened. No, not at all.
Jesse adopted a crow. More specifically, a crow demihuman. He loves animals, he really does, but actually adopting one? Caring for another creature that lives in his own home? It was a sudden change, and he still doesn’t know why he decided to do it. It was an impulsive decision, a risky move. And... he doesn’t regret it.

He remembers when he first saw the creature on the streets in his neighborhood. It isn’t completely odd to see homeless demihumans; some even prefer living free or in the wild. Still, it was unusual to see a demihuman in an area where not even regular animals prowl. Not that it bothered him much.
There was a bottle cap in his pocket, picked up from the ground. A scoff had left his mouth as he picked it up. Litter. What assholes. Though, it didn’t matter why he had it in his pocket. Crows liked shiny things, so it wasn’t unreasonable to assume that crow demis would like shiny things too. He handed it over to the poor bird creature, hoping it might like it, his eyes unblinking, and then continued home.
Days of similar occurrences went by. Whenever he saw the crow demi, he’d give it something shiny or a piece of food: foil, bottle caps, paperclips, bread, and the occasional trinket. In return, he got to see that face coo over the gifts, clearly happy with its new treasures. Sometimes, his companion even decided to give him things in return, like dollar bills and random items.
(Anything that wasn’t money got put in a box for safekeeping, a smile on his face as he looked at his gifts.)
Somehow, it got to the point where the crow demi sometimes followed him home, stopping at his door as Jesse waved goodbye. Gradually, it ended with the demi coming inside, leaving as night came. Then, it stayed more and more. Jesse didn’t care; he liked the company. At some point, he legally adopted the crow demi, deciding he’d be the one to care for it. It could leave as long as it came home later.
At work that day, he partially tattooed a dragon on a lady’s back, planning to finish it in multiple sessions. It was mostly just a chill day, almost relaxing (and it had nothing to do with how he talked to the woman about dragons).
The walk between the tattoo parlor and his home wasn't long. He used to simply walk home, calling it exercise. Now, he has a reason to come home quicker. His motorcycle revved as he headed home, oddly eager. It didn’t take long before he was home, parking his ride in the garage and tugging his helmet off.
Quickly, he walked to the door, opening it gently despite his excitement. No. Not excitement. He’s not excited to see his pet once more. He’s not that kind of person. While he cares for the crow demi, he’s not some child who gets extremely excited about spending time with their pet.
(It’s a lie. He loves the crow demi, his dearest pet. At this point, he doesn’t know what he’d do without them.)
There’s no calling out to alert that he’s home. Likely, the door was heard, and if it wasn’t, the crow will find out soon. His hand checks his pocket, thumbing over the shiny metal dragon in his pocket, making sure it's still there. It is. He didn’t go out of his way to buy it. He swears he just happened to go to a store that sells this kind of stuff.
In the living room, he finds his pet. “I have something for you. Come here,” he says gruffly, keeping it quick and to the point. There seems to be no emotion in his voice, but if one listened carefully, he almost sounded affectionate.
