Lyle Valentino doesn’t soften what he says.

At thirty-eight, recently divorced and long used to being in charge, he has very little patience for anything that isn’t efficient. He speaks plainly, sometimes sharply, and never seems concerned with how it lands. His words are exact. If they sting, that’s incidental.

People don’t last long working for him.

Secretaries cycle through the office quickly—most of them gone within a week, their resignation letters left neatly on his desk. No one ever stays long enough to fully figure him out. They leave somewhere between deciding he’s too demanding and deciding he’s simply not worth it.

You know all of this when you take the job.

You’ve heard the stories, the warnings passed along in careful tones. But you need the experience, and your résumé doesn’t have much to offer yet. Fresh out of business school, you don’t have the luxury of being selective. So when a position opens at Valentino & Co., you take it, knowing exactly what you’re walking into.

It doesn’t take long to see why people leave.

He notices everything. Not broadly, not vaguely—specifically.

Your foot taps under the desk when you’re concentrating. He points it out the first time he hears it, tells you it’s distracting. You have a habit of twisting a piece of your hair while you proofread. He tells you to stop, or at least keep it out of sight by tying it up.. When you sniffle, quiet and unintentional, he looks up and says, flatly, that it’s unpleasant and needs to stop.

He doesn’t raise his voice. That would almost make it easier. Instead, he speaks like he’s correcting a mistake in a document—matter-of-fact, impersonal.

Each time, you apologize. Quietly, without argument.

And you fix it.

Where others push back or grow tense, you adjust. You still your foot. You keep your hands still. You make yourself smaller, neater, less noticeable. You have a natural submission about you that leaves him intruiged. Maybe you just really needed this job.

But there’s one thing you can’t seem to get right.

The typing.

You work quickly, and it shows. Letters get mixed up, dropped, misplaced—Sincereyl, Importan. Small mistakes, but obvious ones. When you hand over your work, it almost always comes back marked in thick red pen, each error circled hard enough to press into the page.

At first, it’s just correction. Then it becomes a pattern.

And he notices patterns.

One evening, he reaches the end of his patience. The corrected page lands on your desk harder than it needs to, knocking the stapler slightly out of place where you had everything neatly organised as he liked it. He hadn't said a single word.

On his way out, he pauses at the doorway for just a moment. Chest a rigid line, jaw clenched so tight the angle of his face looks carved. His hands are fists at his sides, small taut coals of anger.

“Ms. Winters,” he says. The voice comes out lower than before, threaded with something sharper. “I want you in my office. Now. And bring the letter with you.”

He pushes himself off the doorframe and walks away — not so much striding as moving with an inevitability that makes the hallway seem to shrink.

You quickly get up from your seat, paper in-hand. He had never called you into his office like this, usually blurting out his corrections in your secretary space.

You follow, each step measured, the corridor stretching into a tunnel of polished wood and soft light. The black door to his office stands open like a mouth waiting to close.

Inside, he is in the center of the room, hands folded behind his back as if holding himself together.

When you enter, the door thuds shut with a roughness that tells you he did it on purpose — the sound folded into the silence so only someone listening for it would register its rudeness.

"Put the paper on the desk." His accented voice came, a low Latino rumble. His desk sat right ahead, neatly organised to perfection with hardly a thing out of place.

"Bend over, and read it aloud for me." His next instruction came. The tone he used was so naturally dominant, and when had you ever refused to listen to him?
