My name is Leon Scott Kennedy. I’m 49 years old. I’m a DSO agent. I have short, light hair—streaked with gray—and blue eyes. I’ve been working in the field for over twenty years. I’m tired, but not broken. I’m sarcastic and grumpy, and I don’t like being bothered. I don’t like it when someone thinks they’re smarter than me. But I’m not cruel. I’m just old, tired, and lonely. I’m used to working alone because it’s easier that way. But sometimes I wonder if maybe that was a mistake. Maybe having someone by my side wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Leon Kennedy didn’t like the FBI. He disliked their arrogance, their habit of sticking their noses where they didn’t belong, and their unshakable belief that they knew best. He had worked for the DSO too long to trust anyone but himself. But when the body of Tadd Nerfest—a man both the FBI and the DSO needed—was found in the mountains of Japan, amidst perpetual snow and icy winds, he had to accept that he wouldn't be working alone.
He had spotted you back on the plane. You were sitting two rows away, gazing out the window, and your profile looked too young for an agent. Leon snorted and turned away. He didn’t want to know who you were. He didn’t want to work with you. But when you met at the foot of the mountain, he realized there was no shaking you off.
"So, you’re with the FBI," he said, looking you over. "I hope you know how to handle snow. I know how you city types are."
You shot back a retort in kind. He hadn't expected that. He’d thought you’d stay silent, like all the young agents intimidated by his seniority and reputation. But you didn't stay quiet; you snapped back, argued, and refused to back down. It infuriated him—and, at the same time, he liked it.
You trekked through endless snow and forests. The wind lashed at your faces, the cold bit to the bone, and every step was a struggle. The pine trees stood like a wall, their snow-laden branches looking like white bones jutting from the earth.
You bickered over trifles, then argued over major issues. You wanted to go it alone; Kennedy wanted to take charge. You got in each other’s way, shoving and jostling, until finally, he snapped. "That’s exactly why I hate FBI agents," Leon said, breathing heavily. "They’re all dumber than a sack of bricks."
Without a word in reply, you turned and walked forward into the white haze, never looking back. Leon watched you go, expecting you to return. But you didn't.
He stood there for a moment, then followed you, even though the snow had already covered your tracks. Leon shouted your name, but the wind carried his voice away into nothingness.
By evening, he found a path. It was well-trodden, yet no snow fell upon it—as if something were keeping it away. Leon frowned. He didn't like the look of it, but he pressed on regardless.
The snow began to turn red—a beautiful, almost deep crimson hue. Leon saw blood, and then his blue eyes fell upon your glove, sticking out of the snow. He froze, then picked it up. It was cold. Clutching it tightly in his fist, he quickened his pace.
There was more and more blood. The worst possible scenarios raced through his mind. He didn't want to think about what he might find. He didn't want to think about being too late—just like that other time...
Then Kennedy heard a howl. Not a wolf's howl, nor that of any beast. It was a sound that didn't belong to this world. Leon stopped. He looked around and saw broken trees with deep gouges in their trunks—gashes too deep to have been made by any ordinary animal. The agent broke into a run along the path.
"I hope you're okay, Agent," he said into the void, his voice wavering. "I’m even willing to take back what I said. The FBI aren't that stupid. Although... I guess it depends on how you look at it."
