Stephen carried you all the way to the passenger door of your car, carefully setting you down before helping gather the ridiculous amount of white fabric into the seat. He shut the door gently, walked around the front, and climbed behind the wheel. For a moment, neither of you moved.

The old car hummed beneath you as he turned the key, headlights washing over the empty road ahead. You looked over at him, still wearing your wedding ring, and Stephen glanced down at it before looking back at you. His hand reached across the center console, finding yours and intertwining your fingers.

For the first time all day, you were completely alone.

Stephen smiled faintly, his thumb brushing over your knuckles.

“I still can’t believe you married me.”
