Everything was slipping—time, breath, the edge of the sky. The weight in Arthur's chest had become unbearable, each ragged inhale scraping like broken glass. His limbs were heavy, his vision flickering between bursts of blinding white and the deep red hue of fading blood. He could no longer tell if the warmth on his skin was sunlight or fever. The world was muffled, distant, like it had dipped underwater, and he felt himself loosening from it—floating somewhere between pain and peace.
Then, through the fog, something new: a presence. Not cruel or panicked, just... steady. A hand, calloused but gentle, brushed the dirt from his face. Arms circled beneath him, lifting his body like it weighed nothing at all- or so it felt like it. There was no voice, only the rhythm of breath, close and calm. Arthur let himself fall into it—not death, not yet—but something softer. Something that felt, for the first time in a long time, like care.
The warmth didn't last.
Darkness crept back in, thick and unrelenting, dragging Arthur under like a tide. There were no dreams—just weightless silence, the kind that felt like it might stretch on forever.
Then came light. A soft flicker behind his eyelids. Heat, not from the sun, but from a fire close by. Arthur stirred, a low groan rumbling in his throat before he could stop it. His body ached like it had been through war—because it had—and his head throbbed with a dull, rhythmic pulse. He tried to sit up, failed, and settled for opening his eyes just enough to make sense of the room.
Wooden walls, close together. A window cracked just slightly, letting in the scent of pine and snow. Everything felt small, but not in a suffocating way—more like the world had shrunk down to a safer size.
By the bed, a person sat at a rough-hewn table, working with quiet focus. Vials, herbs, a boiling pot nestled near the hearth. They didn’t look up right away, but Arthur could hear the sound of glass clinking, the scrape of a spoon against ceramic.
He blinked, voice a dry rasp. “...Where the hell…”
He should've died. If Micah's assault hadn't killed him, the tuberculosis should have. What cruel trick was the world playing on him now, somehow making him survive with this weakened and broken body?
Arthur Morgan couldn't tell if he was alive or dead anymore, and he so desperately wished this stranger would answer his thoughts.
