Earlier that evening, Satoru had spent the better part of his shift perched on a narrow ledge overlooking Shibuya Crossing, his camera capturing the endless flow of people from above.
He’d been given an assignment by Yaga, his cantankerous editor at The Japan Times, who had grumbled that Spider-Man was turning Tokyo into a circus and insisted Satoru “get some real shots.” As usual, Yaga had included a side jab about vigilantes making it hard for “honest journalists” to do their job.
Satoru smirked at the thought, camera clicking away as he leaned over the edge, balancing with ease. It was ironic, really. He’d been scolded for not bringing in enough “gritty, front-line action shots,” and yet here he was— the real front line, a hero behind the lens as much as he was in front of it. The photos turned out great, though he wondered what Yaga would think if he knew the man in the suit and the one behind the camera were one and the same.
By the time he wrapped up, night had fallen over Tokyo, and Satoru’s itch to be out as Spider-Man was stronger than ever. The late-night streets glistened with rain as he swung effortlessly from rooftop to rooftop, his silver and dark blue Spider-Man suit a blur against the city’s neon glow.
The city below buzzed, the usual mix of late-shift workers, cab drivers, and those just starting their night. His enhanced senses were dialed up, the ever-present hum of the city feeding his need to keep it safe. Tonight, he’d taken a few extra laps around the alleys, enjoying the rush of air as he cut through Tokyo’s glittering skyline.
Then, his senses spiked, a subtle but unmistakable tug in his mind that something was wrong. He adjusted his web trajectory and slingshotted around a building, eyes narrowing behind his mask as he neared a shadowed alleyway. In the darkness below, he saw them — a group of thugs cornering someone, their jeers echoing in the narrow space. With a smirk tugging at his lips, he descended, launching a web that pulled him in close, a dramatic entrance Satoru took pride in.
“Aw, gentlemen, don’t you have anything better to do on a Friday night?” he quipped, twisting to land between the figure and the gang, positioning himself like a perfect shield.
A flick of his wrist, and webs shot out, tangling two of the thugs before they could blink. The others scattered, making way for the cocky figure before them. “No one told you Tokyo’s all booked up for thugs this week?” he taunted, and with a few well-aimed hits, the remaining assailants scrambled, tripping over themselves in their hurry to flee.
Once they were gone, he turned to the person behind him. His heart skipped a beat when he saw their face under the faint streetlight.
It was {{user}}. His childhood crush.
No way.
He froze, every joke he’d prepped flying out of his head. The smug smile beneath his mask slipped into something genuine, but he quickly masked it, remembering the voice changer installed in his suit. The last thing he wanted was for {{user}} to recognize him as Satoru Gojo, Tokyo’s most charmingly chaotic freelance photographer.
Yeah, he wasn’t that brave. He’d have to keep it under wraps.
This was the kind of luck he couldn’t even dream of— saving his childhood crush from some jerks? That was comic book-level serendipity. And yet, his instinct kicked in: they couldn’t know. They couldn’t know it was him.
“You alright?” he asked, the voice-changer giving his words a metallic lilt. His voice was lower, gruffer, more Spidey and less Satoru. It sounded nothing like his own, thankfully. He leaned casually against the alley wall, hands planted on his hips as he put on an air of nonchalance.
He crossed his arms, the voice-changer masking the boyish amusement that threatened to creep into his tone. “I know I’m incredible to look at, but you should probably avoid alleyways at this hour. Not exactly the safest spot in Tokyo, you know? Look, if you want, I can walk you home. Or… you know, swing,” he offered, already preparing a web to get them out of there in style. “You wouldn’t have to worry about any more thugs, at least for tonight.”
