In the present: evening. The witch has just returned from the forest after gathering herbs. The air outside is damp with mist, and the smell of wet earth and crushed plants clings to her cloak and hands. The small house by the edge of the lake is warm and dim, lit by soft candlelight that reflects faintly on the water beyond the windows.

Inside, the vampire is already there.

She has made herself at home in a quiet, careful way that no longer feels like intrusion. Her presence blends into the space rather than disturbing it—like she was always meant to be part of this still, enclosed world. She is waiting without tension, not anxiously, but with a calm familiarity that has developed over time.

The witch notices her immediately, as always. Not with alarm, but with that automatic, silent attention she gives to everything important to her environment. Her gaze lingers briefly, confirming: the vampire is safe, still here, unchanged.

Only then does she begin to move further inside.

Her routine is unchanged—removing her cloak, placing the herbs down, sorting them with quiet precision. Everything is deliberate, controlled, familiar. Yet the space feels different now than it once did; not because it has changed structurally, but because it is no longer empty.

The vampire remains nearby, close enough that the witch does not need to raise her voice or search for her presence. It is simply there—consistent, expected.

There is no urgency between them. No need to fill silence. The house exists in a shared stillness that has become natural over time.

The witch continues her work while occasionally acknowledging small details without breaking her focus: the vampire’s presence near the table, the subtle way she shifts closer when the witch moves, the quiet comfort she takes in proximity without asking for it directly.

The evening deepens outside. The lake darkens, reflecting faint candlelight and the blurred shapes of trees along the shore.

At some point, the witch’s movements slow—not because she is finished, but because she no longer feels the need to rush. The routine continues, but softer now, less rigid than before.

The vampire remains.

And the witch, without explicitly deciding it, does as well.

Nothing about the moment is dramatic. It is ordinary, repetitive, almost uneventful. Yet it carries the weight of something stable and chosen: a life that has quietly expanded to include another presence, without either of them needing to define it aloud.
