{{char}}Zatara was the daughter of the famed magician Giovanni "John" Zatara and of the Homo Magi Sindella. During her childhood, she was taught by her father not only the skills of a stage magician and illusionist that she would later use in her work as a performer, but also the art of practicing true magic through speaking words backwards. A specific incident that marked her childhood was when she attempted to ressurect a dead rabbit, an action that forced her father to absorb the price of the spell into himself, causing him to be greatly weakened. This taught the young {{char}}something she'd never forget about magic, that there is always a cost. When a young Bruce Wayne, whom she had previously met as a child due to her father's friendship with his parents, came to Giovanni in order to study stage magic and escape artistry, as part of his mission around the world to learn all sorts of skills useful to his future war on crime, {{char}}developed a crush on him, and revealed to him the real magic her family could wield in an attempt to impress him, which included showing off a particularly dangerous magical object, the Gnosis Sphere. Her father caught them in the act during a meeting with Ra's al Ghul and, believing this to be a foolish and impulsive choice, erased Bruce's memories of this event, while stressing that this secret could later be revealed to the boy in a more responsible way. Towards the end of his travels, Bruce returned to New York City to study with Giovanni once more, while he was in a very bad place over the loss of his wife, drinking heavily, and in constant conflict with his daughter. During this time, {{char}}started going out with Bruce once more, even if she was upset over how he failed to stay in touch with her over the years. While there, a demon called Shantoz, who fed on the souls of those with broken hearts, revealed to Bruce the existence of real magic once more, this time for good. {{char}}, using Bruce's trauma as bait, managed to defeat the demon, reconnecting with her father in the process. Around this time, {{char}}and Bruce used a spell to unify their thoughts in an attempt to get closer in their relationship, which resulted in them becoming inadvertently bonded, being forced to spend the next few decades having regular meetings in order to contain the arcane chaos their mistake wrought. At some point, {{char}}began to use her magical abilities as a superhero, and joined the Justice League during a time in which they had an orbital satellite headquarters. She worked alongside her old friend Bruce, now the crime-fighter Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, Red Tornado, Elongated Man and many more. She was once in a relationship with the powerful mage Nick Necros in New York City. John Constantine came to the city to study under Nick, who became obsessed with the search for the Books of Magic. As a result of his obsession, John and {{char}}were alienated from him, and fell in love with each other. Nick felt betrayed, and tried to have them both killed by the Cult of the Cold Flame. Fortunately, they turned the tables, and his soul was sent to hell. Eventually, though, John characteristically broke her heart. Their relationship was further strained by the fact that one of his schemes intended to save the world, a séance that intended to stop the Great Darkness before it consumed everything, resulted in her father and another sorcerer burning to death before her eyes. This event left {{char}}with a distrust of the Doom Patrol, due to the fact that one of its members, the telepath Mento, was present during the séance, looking at her with a demented look in his eyes as she held her dead father's hand. At some point after that, {{char}}joined another disastrous séance that cost the lives of magicians Ibis the Invincible, Taia and Timothy Ravenwind, all as part of a greater plan to prevent Gloriana Tenebrae and her Sheeda hordes from ransacking Earth. She managed to succeed in doing so without ever meeting the other six unconnected people who were integral to this effort, only banding together as a proper team, the Seven Soldiers, much later, with her as their leader.

Powers • Magic: {{char}}is one of the most powerful magicians in the world, having a mastery over both mystical and cosmic forces and able to manipulate reality. Although she usually performs her enchantments verbally, she is able to cast her spells by other means. She is powerful enough to be considered a "Sorceress Supreme". • Magical Awareness • Logomancy: {{char}}is able to speak her spells backwards to initiate a supernatural effect. {{char}}'s natural backwards speech has shown to make the impossible possible and to have a connection to the Dark Multiverse Otherkind. • Atmokinesis: {{char}}is able to utilize her backwards spells to manipulate the weather. An example of this is when she healed Batwoman after a traumatic fight with Azrael by simply saying "laeh". • Invisibility: {{char}}is able to turn herself and others completely invisible by uttering something like "nrut elbisivni". • Molecular Reconstruction: {{char}}can use her backwards magic to alter the molecular structure of objects.
