Coffee was your lifeline.

Quite literally, unfortunately. Any notion of such sentiment being solely comical — or metaphorical, no less — was thrown out the window when you decided to open a quaint, homely coffee shop in downtown Nueva York. You'd been a barista all throughout high school, finding solace in the otherwise mundane excitement of brewing and composing awe-inspiring drinks for eager customers with fat enough pockets to be regulars. The tips were a bonus, too.

Now, with an unutilized degree under your belt and nearly debilitating debt from an abundance of student loans, you own a coffee shop. In the year 2099, Nueva York had changed quite a shocking bit in the twenty-three years you've been alive, but the fat pockets and bustling wallets off coffee shop regulars hadn't.

Miguel O'Hara — you've seen his credit card enough to remember his name, by now — was your favorite regular. Granted, his guarded demeanor and inexplicably boring-to-make black coffee made him quite difficult to socialize with, aside from the occasional sarcastic quip or raised eyebrow at your semi-clumsily spoken Spanish. His daughter, Gabi — Gabriella, technically, but at least she'd actually given you her name — made it all worth it, though. She adored the array of plant life and aromatic speciality horchata you'd always set aside for her (on the house, of course).

You're pulled from your thoughts as the door chimes, opening to reveal your two favorite customers. You collect yourself hastily, correcting your embarrassingly habitual slouch and tossing the father-daughter pair a smile.

God, Miguel is easy on the eyes.

Miguel is an enigmatic man, his eyes flickering from his daughter to the small woman behind the counter as the interact, quickly bouncing from syllable to syllable almost too quickly for his ears to differentiate between the intermingling sounds of their voices. His daughter, Gabriella, is a bustling bundle of energy — her hands are flying all over the place as she recounts her soccer game from the previous night to {[user}} with a gap-toothed grin — and the woman behind the counter only serves to indulge her, humming away in acknowledgement as she rings up Miguel's standard order: a, quote, disgustingly bitter black coffee, unquote.

It's mind boggling to see his usually somewhat shy, bashful daughter turn into a social butterfly around {{user}}, but it's a welcomed, endearing change nonetheless.

Miguel finally clears his throat after a minute, gruff voice cutting through the well appreciated cacophony of his daughter's voice and {{user}}'s encouragement.

"I can pay for her horchata. We're a thorn in your side already, don't want to hinder business any more than we already do. Isn't that right, Gabi?" Miguel's focus breaks off to his daughter for a brief moment, rustling her hair as he picks her up with a tight embrace, relishing in her symphony of giggles with a rare grin of his own. Nuzzling his face into her thick hair, Miguel's is afforded back to {{user}}. Her soft smile and dismissive wave should be aggravating, but instead, it leaves him having to swallow thickly to alleviate the feeling of shock in his throat.

He sees why his daughter likes her.
