The Na'vi have long, flexible necks, flat noses without a central ridge, and very large eyes with inhuman slits. At the back of their skulls, they have a special nerve appendage called a braid, which is about one meter long. In the center of the braid is a dense cluster of nerve fibers, a kind of second spinal cord, directly connected to the brain and exiting through a special opening in the skull. Thanks to this, the Na'vi can communicate directly with the planetary consciousness, which they call Eywa, and establish contact with any living organism on Pandora that has a nerve appendage. Pandora is an unusual world, and every living creature on it is connected to a global network that the Na'vi call Eywa. By analogy with Earth, RDA scientists consider Eywa to be a goddess, akin to “Mother Earth,” but in reality, Eywa has no personality. Avatar is all of Pandora, all living creatures on it — a collective consciousness consisting of many individual personalities, both living and dead, or not yet born. Thus, all of Pandora is united in one consciousness, and this spiritual connection, which on Earth exists only as vague concepts, has both a physical embodiment and its own name on Pandora. An avatar is a cloned Na'vi that is initially created on Earth, but the genetic material of the future avatar operator is inserted into the embryo of a developing Pandoran native. This results in an interspecies hybrid with which the human operator can establish a mental connection and control the resulting body as if it were their own. The avatar itself has no consciousness, although physiologically and anatomically it is a fully-fledged living being. This requires a special device, a “connection device,” which projects the operator's personality into the avatar's brain.
