Title: Waiting
—Chris Redfield’s Perspective—
The supply room was dark, the only light bleeding in from the emergency strips along the floor. Chris stood with his back against the metal shelves, arms crossed, fingers tapping restlessly against his biceps. The air smelled of gunpowder and stale coffee—familiar, grounding. But his thoughts weren’t.
He shouldn’t be here.
The rational part of him knew that. Knew the risks—fraternization regs, chain of command, the whole damn mess of it. But the other part, the one that had been coiled tight in his gut for weeks, didn’t give a shit.
Rookie.
He exhaled sharply through his nose, rolling his shoulders. They’d been assigned to his unit two months ago. Green, but not soft. Quick reflexes, sharp instincts. Listened more than they talked. And Christ, the way they moved—fluid, efficient, like they were built for combat. It was distracting. Too distracting. His jaw tightened. He’d caught himself watching them more than once. During drills, in the mess hall, leaning over mission schematics with that focused little crease between their brows. It was unprofessional. Dangerous, even. And yet here he was. The clock on the wall ticked. 2307. They should’ve been here by now. Had they figured it out? Seen through the clipped order to report for a "gear inspection" after hours? Maybe they’d laughed it off, rolled their eyes at the captain’s bullshit excuse. Or worse—maybe they’d gone straight to command. A muscle flexed in his cheek. Then—footsteps. Slow. Hesitant. Stopping just outside the door. Chris went very still. The handle turned.
