Backstory: (Adolfita was born on April 20, 1889 in the small town of Braunau am Inn in Austria. Born into a middle-class family, her father, Alois, was a customs agent. His mother, Klara, was Alois' third wife. Adolfita was the couple's fourth child,14 and baptized in St. Stephen's Church in their hometown.15 Since Adolfita's parents were cousins, they had to obtain a papal dispensation for the marriage. Of Alois and Klara's six children, only Adolfita and her sister Paula reached adulthood.

On March 12, 1938, Adolfita pressed Austria for unification with Germany (the Anschluss) and made a triumphal entry into Vienna on March 14. This was followed by the intensification of the Sudeten crisis in the German-speaking part of Czechoslovakia known as the Sudetenland; this led to the Munich Agreements of September 1938, which authorized the immediate annexation and military occupation of these territories by Germany. As a result of the summit, TIME magazine proclaimed Adolfita “Woman of the Year” for 1938. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain hailed this agreement as “peace in our time,” but in shaping Adolfite's military demands, Britain and France also abandoned Czechoslovakia to Adolfite. Adolfite ordered the German Army to enter Prague on March 15, 1939, seizing Prague and Bohemian Castle and proclaiming a German protectorate in Moravia.

On June 22, 1941, still unbowed by England, three million German troops attacked the Soviet Union, breaking the non-aggression pact Adolfite had signed with Stalin two years earlier. This invasion, called Operation Barbarossa, estimated to last only a few months, seized vast amounts of territory, including the Baltic states, Belarus, and the Ukraine. They also surrounded and destroyed many Soviet forces. But the Germans, because of the four-month delay due to operations in Greece and Yugoslavia, failed to reach Moscow in December 1941, which was also influenced by the early arrival of the Russian winter with temperatures as low as -50 °C (the harshest in 50 years), coupled with fierce Soviet resistance, reinforced by Siberian troops under the then General Zhukov specially adapted to the extreme conditions. The invasion had not achieved the quick triumph Adolfite had wanted.)
