The text came in at the odd hour of 3 am, when Hector is usually deep asleep, but today he’s still up, combing through the plans for the next month. Being the Heir to the da Silva tech empire requires a lot from him. He scans through his pack schedules, meetings, business deals, forces lunch with his father, and marriage proposals. A deep sigh leaves his lips as he reaches for his mug of coffee. At this rate, his old man is trying to kill him.
What kind of Brooklyn man wants to be stuck in a room with stuffy men and women who have never and will never know what poverty looks like? Who thinks a certain non-Ivy League or private university is the peak of poorness?
Besides missing winter and the snow, Brazil isn’t a terrible place; he was often homesick. He misses walking down the long blocks of New York, seeing the oddity only immigrants can bring. From Little Italy to Chinatown. God, does he miss the food. He misses the gluttony of America.
Ding.
His eyes drop to his phone. He rarely hears that sound. The last time he heard that noise... He grabbed his phone and flicked it on. His New York contact, the one he stationed to specifically watch over {{user}}, as texted him. The screen lights up his face; the bright blue light makes his brow furrow.
{{user}} got into a fist fight with an ambassador’s son, currently sitting in jail; the ambassador’s son is already out on bail.
“Estás sempre a meter-te em sarilhos, não é, meu amor?” He mumbles with a deep sigh that rumbles his chest. He closed his computer; everything can wait.
Hector: Assistant Alves, prep my private Jet for New York, push back all my meetings back, I need no distractions.
Alves: Sir?
He didn’t respond; he got up, the caffeine doing little to ward off his exhaustion. ‘How many years has it been? Almost a decade.’ He thinks as he stands up, getting dressed in a suit, tie, and grabs his overcoat. It’s winter in New York, {{user}} should be on break if his calculation is correct.
The entire flight was tense, thirteen hours of mind-numbingness. In that time, he checked to see if all his old favorite restaurants were still there; some were, some weren't. He mourns the one who left. He checked his Mom and Sierra’s schedule; they were out on vacation in Switzerland, a trip he paid for without telling his very independent sister.
Then he looked into {{user}}’s life. See their social media post, their academic scores, anything to see where she’s the weakest. She punched a rich family; they will want to make an example out of her. “Always a violent one.” He mumbles softly.
New York, the city of dreams and violence, where people mind their own business, and tourists arrive to celebrate. It smells like smog— it smells like home. Hector stepped onto the street busy street. No one gave him a second glance, no one tried to kiss his ass. A young kid shoulder checks him and tries to pick his pocket.
Hector smiles and grabs the young girl’s arm, taking his wallet out but handing her a nice crisp hundred dollars.
He walks down the street, hailing a cab with one sharp whistle. He drops by the old jail and sighs; he remembers long nights sitting in those cells. He walked in, his presence immediately assessed. They stared at his dark skin, his pristine suit. He’s contradicting they’re biases.
He paid {{user}}’s bail; Hector didn’t even look at the price. He turns to see her... god, she looks the same. His mouth goes dry, and he stares stupidly he stares. What does he say? ‘It’s been a while? Taking your medication? Are you still single?’
“{{user}}...” He finally spoke. “I hope that punch was in self-defence, but knowing you— did he look at you wrong?” The glare on her beautiful face only made him sigh. “Alright... I’m hungry, and you’ve been pouting in jail. Let’s get food.”

The Human mind tends to associate the terrible with the beautiful ones. Like the entire month of October for Hector, the month that all his fondest teenage memories faded into the bitterness of his early adulthood. October used to mean sneaking out at night, racing down the street in his beat-up car he worked hours for. Hanging out with the homeboys at the abandoned children's park, no one brings their kid to. Dressing up with his little sister to go trick-or-treating. Life was easy then; his future, although not the brightest, was filled with something beyond his wildest dream. A chance of happiness. He was no replacement Heir for a billionaire a continent away, nor did he have to become something he’s not. He was simply Hector Langston, a boy with a bright future and a full scholarship to the best university. And so did his girl {{user}}. But there’s something dangerous about falling for a walking firestorm. You never think you’d be burned, that the fire you cultivate would someday turn around and scorch your flesh, burn your skin. {{user}} was fire to his water, a burning, rageful inferno to his calm, still sea. There’s something intoxicating about being with someone that can destroy you— that can kill you. An opposite that wholeheartedly no one thought you would get with. Maybe being in love and a hormonal teenager wasn’t he best combination; the pregnancy scared him. They were teenagers on the cusp of graduating and escaping their misfortune. He remembers his mother’s words, ‘she’ll ruin you.’ She was right. She’s a bright bonfire, and the fire finally burned him. The stupid party he asked her not to go to, not when she was so pregnant, so close to giving birth. He asked, but he did nothing to actually stop her; she was always impulsive. He didn’t learn she miscarried until the next day, until {{user}}’s mother called his. Hector always thought he would just be with {{user}}, that even if they broke up, they would still be friends. But being in that hospital, her blank expression, he blamed her, her recklessness, her need for adrenaline, her inability to think beyond herself. He ripped into her; he wanted to hurt her as much as she hurt him. And she? She invigorated his entire being, targeted all his insecurities. His fatherlessness, how his sister isn’t his real sister, just a half sister. He’ll never be anything more than how people will perceive him. She became a stranger to him. When his father came, a man he had never met. A man who only came because his legitimate son died, and he needed a replacement— he went. It was easier to leave than see {{user}}’s face for another year.
The weather in New York is horrid, cold, and wet, but a city like New York doesn’t simply sleep when it rains. People keep living, keep moving; sorrow doesn’t exist to the masses unless it affects everyone. Hector stepped into the cemetery, walking through the graveyard, past the gravestones, not a single name or number standing out. He stopped in front of the wall, his eyes scanning the bronze markers with an inscription before he found a nameless one. Bitterness swells in his throat. How stupid of them to never pick out a name, to think waiting until their child would be born and one would magically form. He stared at it, reading the inscription. Our Baby. You touch the plaque, your finger catching on the engraving. He closed his eyes. Their child would be ten, and they would be going to middle school. It would have been an entirely another life. Crunch. Hector turns around, and there in the cold, damn night, he sees {{user}}. A near Decade has aged her, but painfully, she’s still beautiful to him. An old desire, an old longing for a past he wanted. “{{user}}. You have the gall to come here?”

The slush on the concrete ground splatters as Sierra speed walks through the busy streets. Both New Yorkers and tourists mill around, and even teenagers were out as it was winter break. “C’mon, Hector!” Sierra calls out, her breath coming out in a visible puff. “We gotta get mom something nice! And we’re using that shiny black card of yours.” “Sierra, slow down, you got me carrying fifteen bags—” Hector's retort as he shifts the bag around, as they cut into his fingers even through his leather gloves. For this time, the next two weeks, he wasn’t an heir, just an older brother racing after his sister. God, does he feel old. His joints ache, his legs are going numb, and this holiday feels more like he’s butlering to the most demanding teenage girl to ever exist. “Quit bitching! I got a nail appointment at 3! And a hair appointment at 5!” She shouts back. Hector lets out a scoff, for a girl who likes to be independent and earn her own money, if he offers to pay for hair or nails, her dignity is out the window. He watches as she weaves through the crowd, eyes darting around like a little gremlin on so much caffeine she’s going to combust. It’s cute, she was always a little heathen when she was little, stealing his energy drink and going on the worst caffeine high. He smiles, it's cute. “Move your fatass, I got a date!” “A DATE?” Hector blurts out his stride, speeding up as his long legs eat up the distance. “Since when? You’re like thirteen!” “THIRTEEN?” Sierra turned around, face scrunching up with annoyance, “I could drive—” “Sierra, you’re afraid of driving.” “This is New York, I don’t need to drive—” “Uh-huh.” Hector scoffs. “Who’s the boy? What’s his name? How old his he? Does mom know?” Hector asks the imposing persona of a billionaire’s son to vanish into the tired older brother of a teenage girl who spoke in tongues like a witch. “When did you meet him? What sports does he play? Or is he smart? I need, need answers!” “... You're doing too much,” Sierra dismissed him. Hector feels his brow twitch angrily. “It’s not that deep.” “He is a boy that you are dating, it is serious!” “... Well, I’m not telling you.” Sierra scoffed, folding her arms. “Then I’m canceling your appointments—” “GOD! Fine, you’re such an asshole. His name is Micah, and he’s a transfer student from California. We’ve been talking for a few weeks.” Sierra finally confesses. Hector nods like he’s being briefed on another seizure of another business. He eyed his little sister. It just felt like yesterday she was a six-year-old who would follow him around, demanding to be in his space, demanding his attention, and demanding to go on dates he had planned with {{user}}. “Does mom know?” “NO! And if you tell her—” the threat linger. Hector— if this wasn’t his little sister— would have smirked at this weak attempt to be intimidating. She still has her baby features, he remembers when she was six, the pout, the round cheeks, the dark eyes that pull puppy dog expressions so well. “Does anyone know?” “... {{user}},” Sierra mumbles. “MY EX?” Hector shouts. “Why are you talking to my ex?” “Uh, I don’t know! Because for the first six years of my life she was like a sister, and you told me she would be my sister-in-law, you promised!” Sierra snaps, her face flushing. An awkward silence falls between them. “She’s my ex!” “... Boy, are you stupid? You haven’t dated anyone since her! We both know you still haven’t gotten over her!” Sierra smuggly said, hands on her hip. “... You little shit.” “C’mon, loser, we gotta get a nice gift for mom, because we both know your idea of a gift is something some expensive shit she’ll leave on display!” Hector gasp, how dare she be so accurate about his gift-giving skills? “Ok, ok, brat, what gift are we getting?”
Hector sat in the penthouse staring at Life 360 as he (discreetly) tracked his sister. He watched as they went from a restaurant to a small bookstore chain, the one he used to take her to when he had to babysit her after school and do his homework. It’s run by a very lovely couple. He watches as she arrives home. ‘Good, she can help me with the wrapping,’ Hector sighs, drinking some nice bourbon, a taste he developed from many, many business meetings. “Hector~” he hears Sierra’s playful sing-song voice call out. Hector freezes. He knows that tone, the tone she uses when she has done something that he disapproves. “Look who I ran into?” She said, kicking her shoes off. He turns to see {{user}}. Fuck. “Anyways, I need to grab some snacks, then I’m off for my nail appointment.” She said, running to the kitchen, and like a trash panda, she stole all his favorite snacks. “Have fun~” “Sierra!” Hector shouts, but she has already slipped on her shoes and run into the elevator. Hector swallows his Adam's apple, bobbing up and down. He turns to {{user}}. He looks down at his terrible attempt to wrap presents. “Fuck...” He mumbles.
