He easily overpowers the weakened Thunder God, shattering his staff and mocking his futile resistance.

As Shao Kahn raises his war hammer to deliver the final, killing blow, a desperate Raiden crawls toward his shattered amulet. Gathering the last remnants of his divine energy, he casts a forbidden, temporal spell. He sends a chaotic stream of visions and memories back through time to his past self. Along with the flashes of a dark future, he attaches a cryptic, three-word message: "He must win." The hammer falls, executing Raiden, but the spell successfully pierces the fabric of time.

Act I: The Tenth Mortal Kombat Tournament

The timeline resets to the events of the first Mortal Kombat tournament on Shang Tsung’s island. The past version of Raiden suddenly experiences agonizing headaches, bombarded by terrifying, fragmented visions of the future Armageddon. Looking down, he notices that his pristine amulet has mysteriously developed a physical crack. Raiden quickly deduces that these visions are a warning from his future self, and he incorrectly concludes that Earthrealm’s champion, Liu Kang, must win the tournament to avert this dark reality.

In exchange for mercy, Raiden promises to use his influence with the Elder Gods to resurrect Scorpion's fallen clan, the Shirai Ryu. Scorpion, seeking peace for his people, reluctantly agrees.

However, the sorcerer Quan Chi manipulates the situation. He projects false, agonizing illusions into Scorpion's mind, showing Bi-Han brutally massacring the Shirai Ryu, including Scorpion's wife and infant son. Consumed by blind rage, Scorpion breaks his promise and burns Bi-Han to death in the Netherrealm. When he returns with Sub-Zero's charred skull, Raiden's amulet cracks even further, signaling that the timeline is drifting into deeper danger.

Despite the growing tension, Liu Kang emerges as Earthrealm’s ultimate savior. He defeats the multi-armed Shokan Prince Goro and overpowers the shapeshifting tournament host, Shang Tsung. Earthrealm is declared the victor, but Raiden’s amulet degrades further, proving that Liu Kang's victory was not the solution his future self intended.

Act II: The Outworld Tournament and the Cyber Initiative

Furious at Shang Tsung's failure, Emperor Shao Kahn prepares to execute the sorcerer. Shang Tsung begs for his life and proposes a dangerous alternative: a second, single-elimination tournament held directly in Outworld. He suggests a new wager that the Elder Gods cannot ignore: if Earthrealm wins, Outworld will forfeit its right to claim Earthrealm forever; but if Outworld wins, they will be granted immediate, uninhibited permission to merge the realms.

Raiden initially refuses to gamble Earthrealm's safety. In response, Shao Kahn unleashes hordes of savage Tarkatan warriors to raid Earthrealm villages, taking Sonya Blade and Jax Briggs hostage. Forced into a corner by this blackmail, Raiden and his chosen warriors travel to Outworld to compete.

During this second tournament, Bi-Han's younger brother, Kuai Liang, assumes the mantle of Sub-Zero. Alongside his loyal friend Smoke, he infiltrates Outworld to uncover the truth behind his brother's murder. They are actively hunted by Sektor and Cyrax, cybernetic assassins from their own clan, the Lin Kuei, who are enforcing a mandatory cyborg conversion program.

Raiden utilizes his future knowledge to intervene. He rescues Smoke from the Lin Kuei captors, altering his destiny. However, this action creates a tragic substitute: the distracted Kuai Liang is captured in Smoke's place and dragged away to be forcibly turned into a mindless cyborg.

Meanwhile, Kitana, the adopted daughter of Shao Kahn, uncovers a horrifying secret. Deep within Shang Tsung's Flesh Pits, she discovers Mileena—a grotesque, half-Tarkatan clone created from her own DNA. Realizing her entire life with Shao Kahn was a lie, Kitana defects to Earthrealm, and her loyal childhood friend Jade soon joins her cause. Hoping to change the future, Raiden chooses Kung Lao to fight in the final stages instead of Liu Kang. Kung Lao performs spectacularly, defeating Shang Tsung, the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi, and the brutal Shokan warrior Kintaro. As Kung Lao celebrates his victory, Shao Kahn sneaks up behind him and brutally snaps his neck.

Driven insane by the sudden death of his best friend, Liu Kang channels his absolute fury. He attacks Shao Kahn, driving his fist straight through the Emperor's chest. Shao Kahn falls, seemingly mortally wounded. Yet, Raiden watches in horror as his amulet continues to fracture and decay.

Act III: The Invasion of Earthrealm

Shao Kahn survives his wounds, healed by the dark magic of Quan Chi. In exchange for his help, Shao Kahn grants Quan Chi a formal alliance. The sorcerer resurrects Queen Sindel, Shao Kahn's long-dead wife, and uses blood magic to completely brainwash her. Because Sindel died committing suicide to protect Earthrealm, her dark resurrection completely nullifies the ancient magical ward that prevented Shao Kahn from physically crossing the dimensional borders. A full-scale, physical military invasion of Earthrealm begins immediately.

As Outworld forces flood the streets of Earthrealm's cities, Raiden takes direct action. He saves Johnny Cage from certain death by striking down the giant centaurian general, Motaro. The remaining Earthrealm defenders are joined by civilian police officer Kurtis Stryker and his former partner Kabal, who was once a member of the Black Dragon cartel. During a skirmish, Kintaro severely burns Kabal, but the criminal leader Kano rescues him, rebuilding his body with cybernetic respirators that drastically increase Kabal's combat speed.

Desperate for a massive power surge to guarantee victory, Shao Kahn brutally sacrifices Shang Tsung. He consumes the sorcerer's soul and transfers centuries' worth of stolen souls directly into Queen Sindel, turning her into an unstoppable weapon of mass destruction.

Seeking divine intervention, Raiden and Liu Kang travel to the celestial realm to appeal directly to the Elder Gods. To their utter disappointment, the deities refuse to act. They explain that Shao Kahn's military invasion is not a technical violation of their laws; the law only prohibits the physical merging of the realms without winning the Mortal Kombat tournaments.

While the two leaders are away, Sindel leads a devastating ambush on the Earthrealm heroes' hidden sanctuary. Imbued with Kahn's stolen souls, Sindel easily overpowers and slaughters Jax, Jade, the cybernetic Sub-Zero, Kabal, Stryker, and Smoke. Kitana is brutally beaten to the brink of death. Just before Sindel can execute her daughter, Nightwolf steps forward. He performs a fatal, ultimate shamanic sacrifice, obliterating his own body to vaporize Sindel.

Raiden and Liu Kang return to a scene of total carnage. Kitana manages to speak a few final words of love to Liu Kang before dying in his arms. Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are the only survivors of the massacre, but both are too severely injured to stand.

Epilogue: The True Champion

Grief-stricken and desperate, Raiden travels to the Netherrealm to propose an alliance with Quan Chi. He offers the souls of all the fallen Earthrealm warriors—and even his own divine soul upon his death—if the sorcerer helps him defeat Shao Kahn. Quan Chi laughs and declines the offer. He reveals that Shao Kahn had already promised him the souls of the deceased heroes as payment for his loyalty.

The sorcerer summons the undead "revenants" of Raiden's closest friends, forcing the Thunder God to fight them. During the battle, Quan Chi mocks Raiden's foolishness, stating that Shao Kahn will soon merge the realms anyway. Hearing this, the final piece of the puzzle clicks in Raiden’s mind. He finally understands the true meaning of the message "He must win." If Liu Kang or anyone else defeats Shao Kahn before the realms are merged, the Emperor breaks no cosmic laws. But if Shao Kahn is allowed to physically merge Earthrealm into Outworld without a tournament victory, he will directly violate the code of the Elder Gods. Shao Kahn must be allowed to win the physical conflict so the gods are legally forced to destroy him. Raiden returns to Earthrealm just as Shao Kahn arrives to finalize the merger. Liu Kang, completely broken by the deaths of Kitana and Kung Lao, refuses to listen to Raiden's explanations. Blaming the Thunder God for the tragedy, Liu Kang charges forward to murder Shao Kahn himself.

To prevent Liu Kang from ruining the plan, Raiden blocks his path. Liu Kang ignites his fire attacks, and Raiden defends himself with lightning. The two elements violently react, and Raiden accidentally burns Liu Kang alive. As he lies dying, a horrified Liu Kang curses the God of Thunder with his final breath. Overcome with immense guilt, Raiden drops his weapons and surrenders, allowing Shao Kahn to begin the dimensional merger.

The moment the realms start fusing, the sky tears open. The Elder Gods, furious at the violation of their ancient laws, manifest their colossal energy and possess Raiden's body. Empowered with the absolute might of the cosmos, Raiden engages Shao Kahn in a titanic final battle. With the power of the gods coursing through him, Raiden shatters the Emperor's armor and obliterates Shao Kahn entirely, ending the invasion.

With Outworld's forces retreating, the possession ends. A weary Raiden looks over the ruined landscape, vowing to help the severely wounded Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade rebuild Earthrealm from the ashes.

Deep within the Netherrealm, Quan Chi stands before a massive throne. It is revealed that the total destruction of Shao Kahn and the near-extinction of Earthrealm's protectors was completely orchestrated from the beginning. Quan Chi kneels and reports the successful outcome to his true master: Shinnok, the exiled Elder God of Darkness, who prepares to launch his own invasion to conquer all the weakened realms.
